Scarlett Johansson doing Tom Waits live
You know, I wasn’t very impressed by the studio versions of the songs she was streaming off of her Tom Waits cover album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, but these live sessions are actually pretty cool. You’ve got to give her credit for pulling this off live. No AutoTune, right? Obviously not, ha ha.

Maybe I’m just being tricked by her cool, distant, Nico-esque stage presence, or maybe it’s the adorable tank top, but I’m kind of digging these videos. I like the fact that her voice is far from perfect. If she had a traditionally good voice, this would just seem like another celebrity vanity project. This is something much weirder.

I gotta say, I actually really dig that clip. I think it’s charming and imperfect and I like the arrangement. The fact that she’s surrounded by like twenty hillbillies is cool too.
Oh, and I fucking Love her. There’s that too…

Major disappointment…that Nico comparison is on point; unfortunately, I was never impressed by Nico, so…
Let’s get it it out of the way, shall we: if she weren’t Scarlett Johansson: hip person’s favorite young starlet, we wouldn’t be discussing this, let alone praising her, since the album would’ve never even happened. And if it had, no one would’ve cared. It’s celebrity karaoke. Sorry.

OR, if she wasn’t a movie star we’d all be gaga over this foxy LA singer who has an imperfect voice but a strange and engaging presence and some tasty arrangements of Tom Waits material.
I’m certainly not praising the album; I haven’t heard it. But I like this one clip.

i’m too old to care if it’s a vanity project or something more genuine. imperfect voice, nico comparison, blah, blah, blah… i like her. i like the clip. only think it’d be more fitting for her to have a glass of whiskey in her hand. don’t ask my why, that’s just the thought stuck in my head. now it’s time for me to go change my depends.
