The Monkees – Porpoise Song (Theme from Head)

Video: The Monkees – “Porpoise Song”

This is one of the best psychedelic pop songs of all time, and I want it played at my funeral. I’m not planning on dying anytime soon. But when I do, I want this song played at my funeral. Loud. Through good speakers. And it’s got to be the four-minute single version, not the soundtrack version (as heard above) that chops off the awesome instrumental coda. An overdub has no choice and it cannot rejoice. You better believe it, brother.

Check out Carole King‘s demo after the jump.

Damn shame the fidelity of this is as terrible as it is. If anybody has a better version, hit me up.

  1. Hands down, a killer song. (“As We Go Along”, also from Head is probably their best ballad ever.)

Here’s a crazy idea: why doesn’t Mickey Dolenz put together a four piece band and do theatre shows singing all the great Monkees tunes. Nobody wants to hear Davy Jones’ corny, show bizzy, Broadway musical lameness; Peter Tork is sick; Papa Nez has bigger things on his plate; and it’s not like Dolenz is that busy, huh?

  2. This could very well be my favorite Monkees song, and reaffirms my respect for Ms. King as a songwriter. Incredible talent!
