The Top Ten Ain’t What It Used To Be

Bill boredJeez, the #10 album last week only sold 22,000 copies. That’s all it takes to have a Top Ten album these days. 22,000 fans who are willing to pay for your work. That’s the mainstream. If you could have somehow convinced every student enrolled at Michigan State University to buy your album last week, you would’ve had the #4 album in the United States. Paul Grein points out that “Until September 2007, no album in Nielsen/SoundScan history had ever made the top 10 with weekly sales below 30K.” This week had five albums in the Top Ten under 30K, a new record. Billboard 200:

1. Avenged Sevenfold – “Nightmare” – 163,000 (debut)

2. Eminem – “Recovery” – 159,000 (down 15%)

3. Rick Ross – “Teflon Don” – 63,000 (down 64%)

4. Justin Bieber – “My World 2.0” – 38,000 (down 3%)

5. Drake – “Thank Me Later” – 34,000 (down 28%)

6. “Kidz Bop 18” – 29,000 (down 32%)

7. Lady Antebellum – “Need You Now” – 27,000 (up 11%)

8. Sheryl Crow – “100 Miles From Memphis” – 24,000 (down 57%)

9. Lady Gaga – “The Fame” – 24,000 (down 3%)

10. “Now 34” – 22,000 (down 18%)

Further down:

36. Best Coast – “Crazy for You” – 10,000 (debut)

71. Journey – “Greatest Hits” – 6,000 (#1 on Catalog chart)

  1. What is “Avenged Sevenfold?” What is “Kidzbop18?” What is “Now34?” Who is “Rick Ross?”

Who the frack cares? Why even pay attention to Billboard anymore?

It’s over. The intertubes won. Soon, though, google and verizon will have killed net neutrality and we’ll all be in jail.

How do I view GloNo without having to see that Paramore Honda Civic banner ad. Punk Rock dies over and over again, every time that ad loads on a computer screen.
