Brian Wilson Live at Gateshead Sage

Glorious Noise photographer David Wala was the only person granted a photo pass for this show. “It was a privilege to hear all these songs live,” says Wala. “The gig ran like clockwork with an intermission. The crowd loved it—the highlight of the summer at Gateshead Sage.”

New York Dolls at the 100 Club

London, May 14, 2009

London, 14th May 2009 and the New York Dolls are playing their first date since the release of their new album ‘Cause I Sez So, linking up again with Todd Rundgren who produced their debut album which influenced so many of the punk bands that followed them.

It was fitting that tonight’s gig was at the legendary 100 Club on Oxford Street, home of the breakthrough Punk Festival of 1976. In the audience was Paul Simonon who played at the festival with the Clash – he was enjoying the night accompanied by another Dolls fan, Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream.

Peter Doherty - Live in Edinburgh

Peter Doherty in Newcastle Upon Tyne and Edinburgh

March 26 and 27, 2009

Each night Peter Doherty took to the stage with a full band including strings, as well as Graham Coxon and producer Stephen Street. Both nights Peter played the entire Grace/Wastelands album and a mixture of Libertines and Babyshambles songs.

Both nights saw an ecstatic crowd reaction. At Newcastle (my home town) the crowd had to be told to move back from the stage as there was a danger of crushing. In Edinburgh it was a rowdy Friday night crowd, and the lunatic fringe were out throwing glasses of beer (some say piss) at the stage, and looting the merchandise stand. I do not want to sound like a Daily Mail editorial—I am all for the spirit of rock and roll—but there is no justification for acting like a total tool.

Peter Doherty at the Barrowlands

Glasgow, February 24, 2009

6:30pm, three hours before stage time and fans are already queuing around the block, anticipating a night of Arcadian revelry. Such is the fervour of the Glaswegian crowd.

Peter Doherty is playing a sold out show at the legendary Barrowland Ballroom. This venue has not been redecorated since the 1960s, adding to its rough and ready appeal. Every city should have its own Barrowlands.

The Carbon Casino is an intimate night organised by Carbon Silicon the brainchild of punk rock legends Mick Jones (the Clash, B.A.D.) and Tony James (Generation X, Sigue Sigue Sputnik). They feature handpicked support bands, resident DJ (renowned Gary Crowley), special guests, and other shenanigans.

Jesse Malin – Live in Keighley

Jesse Malin at the New Variety

Keighley, West Yorkshire, December 10, 2008

Jesse Malin‘s current European mini tour is taking in key U.K. cities such as London, Glasgow, Brighton, and err….Keighley not a normal fixture for bands touring the U.K..

This was the Gassienda night here at the New Variety – a venue which Jesse said reminded him of a funeral parlour. He was determined to revitalise it with his high energy set.

Dirty Pretty Things – Live in London

Dirty Pretty Things at the Round Chapel

Hackney, East London, December 11, 2008

We have an exciting new contributor to Glorious Noise. Based out of GLONO’s UK Headquarters, photographer David Wala will be shooting shows for us around London.

Wala caught up with Carl Barat and his Dirty Pretty Things at one of the last stops on their farewell tour, a fundraiser for Real Fits. Wala notes, “I did not shoot the gig with my regular camera. I was at the side and behind the stage which I hope gives a different perspective with my pocket but powerful Canon g9 camera.”
