New Grenadier record

One of our bands, Grenadier, has a new album out. "Power pop" seems to be the closest thing to describe it. Elvis Costello, The Sweet, T-Rex, Spoon, Big Star, Raconteurs. Little sonic easter eggs, musical "quotes" from Bowie, The Wrens, Macca, ZZ Top, Heart, subliminally sprinkle...

Kickass, I'm number 10?! Not for long though, probably. Not understanding/caring about music anymore hurts my cause.

A clearinghouse special

If you got some time I posted a little best-of from some of my former bands. There's a little something for everyone: "Longer Lasting" is summertime power pop, "Spider on a Windshield" for alt-count' lovers, "PCP Hoedown" for some cowpunk, "Perennial Favorite"...

Tall Grass Captains opening for Bottle Rockets in Dekalb

The Tall Grass Captains are debuting their live show at Otto's in Dekalb, opening for the Bottle Rockets. (A couple of us used to be in a band that covered the Bottle Rockets' "Thousand Dollar Car" so we're pretty excited). We've got a double-guitar lineup augmented by pedal steel, mandoli...

Article comments bug

Something wierd's happening to my article comments. I'll get an error message about a minute after waiting for it to post. Then it shows up under "Recent comments" but not under the article itself. No biggie but thought I'd let you know.

Thanks very much, Maarten! Suffice to say, if you like those songs, I think you'll like the album. It's very much meant to be taken as one piece. Yes, right now we're only selling online. We could do mail order, as well (PM me or email the website). We have some "brick and mortar" (actual ...

Tall Grass Captains of Greater Chicago

OK, guys, here's my band. We have a new album out and it's already picked up some very nice reviews so far. There's some MP3s on our website http://www.tgcogc.com , and the CD is available at amazon and cdbaby . A little background: I meant for this record to be a song cycle about coming through los...

I don't think vitas was sniping about anything, and if he was, it's the result of the curious smell of "street team" wafting through this thread, whereupon people pose as fans on message boards they've recently joined, rather than just come out and say "hey check out my band." An...

I heard her on the radio (NPR) and she blew me away; I think she played some new songs. But then I listened to some samples of her stuff and it struck me as a bit too mannered (a la Bjork/T. Amos/F. Apple?) Don't know if that's a fair impression. Still, another phenomenal piano/vocal talent.

And so they did. We all know Doug Martsch is the guitar guru, but where did he get his backup guy? Good gravy, three guitarists, each with their own parts...that was easily the most sonically satisfying show I've seen in years. I've always enjoyed Built to Spill's music, but often looked at the song...
