Okay, maybe I don't understand the term 'power pop'. To me, it means catchy, melodic pop songs that are rock/guitar based. Cheap Trick, Sweet, that kind of stuff? Or am I missing it? Hmm, your description is right, but it's sometimes easier to describe it by listing some of the bands that have been...

"Anyway You Want It" is not power pop? Not anymore than I'd call Night Ranger or Styx power pop. And I enjoy music from all those bands. Okay, point taken - ballads were Journey's bread and butter, but they could unleash some pure bubblegum when they wanted to. This is true. Bubblegum can be good, ...

I think re-assessment of groups that were our original "glory days" period is inevitable, even healthy. Some songs and groups that I thought were dogshit back then continue to be dogshit now. Others, yeah, I do find myself somewhat more open to their charms. I think for me the $2 used CD bin at my l...

The Strokes' Is This It album is still a total winner in my book. It's derivative as hell, sure, but it's still full of great songs. Of course, my version is the UK with NYC Cops and the classic "Smell The Glove" cover shot... ;-) http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_rHP5mzMM3Kc/SwqYrYYLLAI/AAAAAAAAAXQ/H14bIFQ...

I'm not sure about the most recent spat, but I googled and finally found the infamous Forced Exposure article where Albini called Surfer Rosa "A patchwork pinch loaf from a band who a their top dollar best are blandly entertaining college rock." http://michaeldempster.com/post/1256694678 Read it, it...

Nah, Paul's shining moment in my eyes is still his music directorial duties for the Blues Brothers. For a pencil-neck geek, Shaffer really has some great chops; he can't be denied that.

He was a second-tier rock 'n roll impresario, but he definitely gave us that TV show, the Archies group, and Kansas. Thanks, Don (no sarcasm meant); say hi to George Goldner for us.

And nah, Vladivostok was too populted for Sven; he opted for a quiet little yurt deep in Tibet.

Dude's gone underground. Only way to get messages to him is by yeti, which are notoriously difficult to nail down. Ya gotta bribe the yeti with whiskey and a coupla hot ladies, then maybe he'll bring a message to Sven for ya.
