hey guys, from one music geek to others, what are some good indie bands that i should check out? I know quite a few, (Yo La Tengo, Teenage Fanclub, ect), so if you could, just list a few indie bands that you guys really like, and what they sound like.

Check out the 'Cool New Tunes' thread - it'll give you lots of good stuff.

You can't go wrong with The Hives, by the way...

There are also a lot of good bands in the Radio section ( http://www.gloriousnoise.com/?pg=radio.php ) handpicked by GLONO staff.

Random "indie" band thought of the day: The Eels. Sounds kind of like Beck meets the Beach Boys.

Good call, sab - Eels is good stuff!

My indie pick of the day is Travis. I've been giving "The Invisible Band" heavy rotation ever since it came out...it's jangly, melancholy pop-rock of the indy flavor, but done oh-so well.

Good indie bands

Yo La Tengo is one of my favorite bands and I'll try to recommend stuff along those lines.

Seam...incredible songwriting, beautiful melodies, occasional ROCK
Bedhead...quiet, droning, clean guitars
Unwound...noisey at times like Yo La Tengo with a whole lot of angst thrown in
The Replacements...not indie rock but if you don't listen to them already you should go back and get "Tim" and "Let it Be."

Because I'm old, you'll notice that some of these bands are broken up and maybe out of print:
Firehose: Minutemen offshoot after D. Boon's death. More "normal" than Minutemen, but still loads of fun, energy and integrity.
The Feelies: One of the EARLY indie acts. Started out nervous and spazzy and jangly, then became jangly and almost pastoral, and then jangly if the Velvets had done jangly... sort of.
Built to Spill: Wonderful, especially if you like guitar solos. Hey, Doug Martch has a solo album out. Anyone know what it sounds like?

If I don't stop now, I'll never stop.

The Reindeer Section

Post by naciyethunders » Tue Aug 27, 2002 2:23 pm

The Reindeer Section is a really amazing indie band from Scotland, with a bunch of members from other indie bands such as The Vaselines, Teenage Fanclub, Bele and Sebastian etc... it's really different and totally worth checking out.
