FCC Chairman Powell Stepping Down

Post by D. Phillips » Fri Jan 21, 2005 10:49 am

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Michael Powell, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, is expected to step down on Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported on its editorial page.

The editorial cited no reason, nor did it name a source for the information.

An FCC spokesman was not immediately available to comment.

Powell, a Republican was named chairman in 2001 by President Bush, after serving as a commissioner since 1997.

Some of the issues that have come to the forefront during his tenure include the concentration of media ownership among a smaller number of companies and regulations that govern telecommunications

Maybe Howard Stern's threats of getting him fired, finally drove him over the edge

Bush made a conscious decision to clear out his cabinet and leadership team for his second term. Not because of their job performance, but out of a belief that top level beurocrats become too entrenched in their positions to properly execute Bush's agenda.

Powell's stepping down shouldn't be viewed as any type of statement on his reign at the FCC. Based on GW's political history and the agenda of the people who support Bush, it might be more likely that the next FCC head will be worse that Powell was.

Agreed. The prevailing trait among the Prez's new appointees has been blind faith to his agenda. Howard Stern has a new enemy, and his name is ________.

Even still, it's hard not to gloat at Powell being shown the door. Adios, fuckface!

Now, how does this pair with Powell's oust? Is there some Parental payola, or just some housecleaning?
