If you can find it, <a href="http://www.flyawaybiirdie.com">Biirdie's</a>"California is Waiting" is a fantastic song.

And NO RHCP. They mention California in every fucking song.

some ideas... I've lived in LA county for 'bout a dozen years now.

Radar Bros. (capture the feeling of hot bright smoggy days better than anyone, without having specific 'about LA' songs)
Latin Playboys (capture the psychedelic latino vibe, see 'Paletero' or 'Old Ironsides')
The Pharcyde (esp. labcabin - homegrown LA, some songs w/ specific LA locale mention)
The Byrds
Beach Boys (something sad from the Brother years, please not the obvious surfin' goldens)

"The Warmth of the Sun" would be a nice one.

Art Brut's "Moving To LA" would fit in I think

My ex made me a great mixed LA CD after my whirlwild trip for work. He was really good at mixed tapes/CD...that's about it:

1) Los Angeles -- X (1980)
2) It Never Rains in California -- Albert Hammond (1972)
3) Please Come to Boston -- Dave Loggins (1974) (It's in the lyrics)
4) California -- Joni Mitchell (1971)
5) Electrolite -- REM (1996)
6) Come to California -- Mathew Sweet (1997)
7) Still in Hollywood -- Concrete Blonde (1986)
8) Hollywood Town -- Manfred Mann (1979)
9) Blue Jay Way -- Beatles (1967) (I don't remember why)
10) King of the Hill -- Roger McGuinn (1990)
11) Mary Provost -- Nick Lowe (1977)
12) California Sun -- Ramones (1977)
13) The Gremmie -- Tornadoes (1963)
14) California Saga -- Beach Boys (1973)
15) Beach Baby -- First Class (1974)
16) Look Out California -- Badfinger (1979)
17) On Top of the World -- Cheap Trick (1978)
18) Hotel California -- Eagles (1976) (Yikes! I forgot this was here)
19) California Man -- Cheap Trick (1978)

Sorry for any repeats. And yes, this was made last century :)

Oh, and MY pick is California Uber Allis -- Dead Kennedys
