5 Best American Rock Bands

Post by Barabajagal » Fri Mar 02, 2007 5:46 pm

It started with a seemingly innocent query and turned into a befuddling conundrum that had my friends and I arguing last night: What are the 5 best American bands?

I couldn't do it. I couldn't even name 3 that could go toe-to-toe with the UK. I kept saying "Velvet Underground, Ramones, um, Credence" but then I don't know that much Credence and the Ramones are great but sorta samey.

Solo artists are out, so no Dylan, no Elvis, no James Brown. We could use those heavyweights, but no. Has to be bands.

A blog named Mote Magazine sems to have tackled this and did a runoff of the top 30. Pearl Jam?!!!!?!?!!!?! KISS??!!! Patti Smith Group?? Blondie??? Jesus.

30. Earth, Wind and Fire
29. MC5
28. Lynyrd Skynrd
27. The Byrds
26. Fugazi
25. The Miracles / Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
24. Rage Against the Machine
23. Patti Smith Group
22. Soundgarden
21. Creedence Clearwater Revival
20. KISS
19. Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young)
18. Van Halen
17. The Stooges / Iggy and the Stooges
16. Sonic Youth
15. Blondie
14. The Red Hot Chili Peppers
13. Pearl Jam
12. The Beach Boys
11. Metallica
10. The Pixies
9. R.E.M.
8. The Grateful Dead
7. Parliament/Funkadelic
6. The Velvet Underground
5. The Doors
4. Sly and the Family Stone
3. The Ramones
2. Aerosmith
1. Nirvana

I don't know, personally I think if our rock bands go to war against the UK's, we are ROYALLY FUCKED.

Anybody who puts The Doors in a top five (of all time) American bands needs to have a 72 hour session of anal torture to straighten their shit out.

I'd imagine anal torture would literally straighten one's shit out.

Replacements
Ramones
Pixies
Velvet Underground
Talking Heads

What about jazz? No one's mentioned Miles, Thelonious, Duke or any jazz musicians, but that is one of the few "American" genres of music.

Here's an interesting question: What bands do you see joining this list in the future? If the list was to be repopulated in the next few decades, what bands will make it? I think The White Stripes, Flaming Lips and Wilco could all be contenders in the very near furture. Some others who could possibly make the list are the Hold Steady, Spoon and TV on the Radio, assuming their individual outputs continues to be excellent.

not to nitpik but MBV is from the UK...though I'd claim them if they'd let us.

I've felt the same thing; the list kind of reaffirms why I'm such at admitted Anglophile.
It's a tough list to compile...but I love making lists so...
If we go to war with 'em, here's my American rock and roll armed forces.

The Metal Marines:
5.) Slayer
4.) Metallica
3.) New York Dolls
2.) The Ramones
1.) The Stooges
The White Noise Navy:
5.) The Pixies
4.) Minutemen
3.) Husker Du
2.) Sonic Youth
1.) The Velvet Underground
The Cerebral Air Force:
5.) Talking Heads
4.) R.E.M.
3.) Los Lobos
2.) The Byrds
1.) The Beach Boys
And when we've blown their shit up, we'll send in
The Party Army
5.) The Grateful Dead
4.) Sly & The Family Stone
3.) Aerosmith
2.) Van Halen
1.) Parliament/Funkadelic

Where America really seems to shine is with those individual artists. When you think about it, our individuals really beat the shit out of anything they've been able to come up with.
That's sayin' something!

The Hip-Hop Cavalry:
5. Tribe Called Quest
4. NWA (with Cube and Dre, obvs)
3. Run DMC
2. Beastie Boys
1. Public Enemy

Depending on your definition of "rock bands," of course...
