Band Madness

Post by hebrew hammer »

Found this in a link on Deadspin: Band Madness. That's right; March Madness with a field of 512 bands. The first round is divided into four parts, with the first ending yesterday. I voted on the second part just now. Some of it's rather inane, but it's a good idea nonetheless.

As for you NCAA fans, feel free to discuss your brackets. I take Kansas. So does Stephen Colbert. They have the letters NSA in the middle of their name, and it's a big advantage to be able to spy on your opponents converstaions.

UCLA all the way, baby.

I didn't do so well in the first round. 11 out of 16 games. Got some good upsets though: VCU, Michigan, and Xavier. In the CBSSportsline.com Bracket Challenge, I'm in like 340,000th place. That's mildly depressing. Like a happy Morrisey song.

I question how informed the voters are on this poll when the Chemical Brothers are beating Big Star by that much.

I know. A couple of match-ups had me yelling "What's wrong with you people" at the screen (T-Rex lost to Audioslave?! Judas Priest is losing to Rod Stewart?!). To that point, Murph better hurry up and vote as his beloved Big Star is still losing to Chemical Brothers.
But what the hell: it's all in good fun.
While a lot of the match-ups are no brainers, it surprised me how many made me think.
Like the Billy Idol vs. Liz Phair one. I have more Liz Phair albums than Billy Idol (which isn't saying much, since I don't have any Billy Idol albums...but I used to back then) and Idol hasn't done anything that comes close to Guyville.
However.
I'm still in disbelief at Phair's recent career decisions and the lazy songwriting that she's demonstrated for the past decade.
So it came down to voting for Idol's Christmas album or Phair's ode to "hot white cum" and determining which was worse.

UCLA? They're worse than last year and they couldn't win the championship then. Homer. But I did take CCSU in the upset... I went 11 for 16 as well.

I was shocked that NIN won last year. I guess they got some help from some message board. I'm surprised Big and Rich managed to get multiple votes against the Beatles. I assume most of their votes came from people who accidently clicked on them. I'm pulling for Wham! and Cpatain Beefheart to comeback. I'm most inetersted to see the result of Band of Horses vs. Rilo Kiley/Jenny Lewis.

CRAP! I noted that Big Star's status is currently listed as "not in tournament". Ah hell... This wasn't exactly a fair fight, though. Chemical Bros. are more recent, they have the benefit of a label which actually stayed in business during the most prolific years of the band's life, better promoted, aren't merely "critics' darlings"... FWIW, the Chemicals eventually got squooshed, too. Such is life when you have a mammoth and arbitrary Battle of the Bands which pits Pink Floyd against Christina Aguilera (??!!).
