The first semi-review of Capital...

Songs:Illinois:
A little over a year ago I went on a jag about the Chicago band Riviera. They'd opened for Wilco, done a great Neil Young cover and released an impressive debut cd. Now the band is back with it's sophomore effort called Capital. This is their second record for the label spinoff of the online rock `n' roll community Glorious Noise and while I haven't absorbed the whole thing yet it does hold promise.

Getting bigger every day in Europe, Riviera is featured on Americana OK;s podcast. Dig it.

Glorious Noise is hun platenlabel en dat slaat de spijker op zijn kop. Riviera pakt namelijk weer uit met hun tweede plaat, Capital. At The End Of The Century was vorig jaar een van de aangename verrassingen, het spreekt dan vanzelf dat we alhier reikhalzend uitkijken naar de opvolger. Riviera flikt het dus weer; opnieuw is dit een magnifieke alt.country-plaat die liefhebbers van Ryan Adams en Whiskeytown blind kunnen aanschaffen. De kracht van Riviera zit hem er onder andere in dat de band drie songschrijvers heeft, Derek Phillips, Josh Boisvert en Mick Radichel. Het geeft Capital een aantrekkelijke gevarieerdheid, al blijft de countryrock heerlijk in de periferie hangen van de jaren zeventig Stones, Neil Young en alles wat alt.country tot alt.country maakt. Gitaren, orgels, heerlijke hooks, gruizige stemmen en een tekstueel idioom van verlangen, verlies, reizen met de auto door de heartlands, drank, seks en fun. Kortom, klassieke americana. Dit alles is verpakt in een mooie transparante en organische productie, en in – twaalf in getal – behapbare liedjes die elk een segment van het containerbegrip countryrock vertegenwoordigen. Deze afwisseling, in relatieve zin dat wel, is een karakteristiek kenmerk van Riviera, waardoor ook Capital weer ontroert – hoor dat prachtige Beach Boys-eerbetoon Everything You Know – en enthousiasmeert in prachtige soepele rocksongs als The Weathermen, Here’s To Us, White Limousine en Golden Lies. Riviera is niet vernieuwend, niet vooruitstrevend, maar maakt met Capital wel een retegoeie neo-countryrockplaat. (Wiebren Rijkeboer)

Glorious noise is the name of their record label and that hits the nail on its head. Riviera spares no expense with their second record, Capital. At the end of the (american?!) century was one of last year’s nice surprises, so it speaks for itself we’re looking forward to its successor. Riviera does it again; again this is a magnifique alt country record which can be purchased blindly by admirers of Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown. The power of Riviera amongst others is its got three songwriters, Derek Phillips, Josh Boisvert and Mick Radichel. This gives Capital an attractive variedness, even if their countryrock sticks around in the periphery (english word?) of seventies Stones, Neil Ypung and everything that makes alt country alt country. Guitars, organs, lovely hooks, gritty voices and a textual idiom of longing, loss, travelling by car through the heartlands, liquor, sex and fun. In short, classic Americana. All packaged in a nicely transparent and organic production, and in –12 in number- rounded songs that represent every segment of the containerconcept of countryrock. This variety, in relative sense as must be said, is a characteristic feature of Riviera, which makes Capital something that touches you –listen to the beautiful Beach Boys-homage Everything you know- and causes enthousiasm with wonderfully supple rocksongs like The weathermen, Here’s to us, White limousine and Golden lies. Riviera isn’t innovative, not progressive, but with Capital creates an (‘ass-good’ haha) excellent neo-countryrockrecord. (Warren Richfarmer)
