White Stripes and Nissan Promos

Come on...isn't anyone excited about the joint promos that the White Stripes are doing with Nissan. Hopefully, this will get them more play on MTV, I don't think they have enough.

"City officials pulled the plug on a free White Stripes show in New York's Union Square Park yesterday, but not before thousands of fans took in a good forty minutes of Detroit's dynamic duo in action. Parks department officials abruptly cut power to the stage in the middle of a song, explaining later that the show was shut down for being too loud. The free show was presented by Nissan - which makes for an odd alliance, as Jack White has often criticized the car industry in interviews. "

Alright -- who really thinks "City Officials" pulled the plug? Give me an f'in break. Can't you just hear Jack White, his A&R guy, and the rep from Nissan's agency saying -

Nissan Rep: "...after exactly 40 minutes, let's just stop and we'll send out a release saying the city made us quit"

Jack White: "But after 40 minutes right?!?!"

A&R Rep: "Exactly, it'll be MAD!! Get the press release over to Carson Daly - STAT!"

I hope Jack has developed callouses on his knees at this point.

You know, it's funny - you're probably right, but as long as White Stripes keep dishing out great music I will cut them incredible amounts of slack. I say go, Jack White-keep pulling those ka-razy media stunts!

If and when they become bloated fame whores who have overstayed their welcome (ala Sting, Rolling Stones, etc), I'll start tossing stones.

Sometimes, don't you wish you could take back the kind words you've said about a band? The White Stripes are beginning to wreak of commercialism. I do agree that if they keep putting out great music, I'll probably keep listening but I can't believe they're sponsored by Nissan of all companies. What's next, the hippie stalwarts,Phish and Dave Mathews Band, doing a tour jointly sponsered by Dow Chemical and logging companies?

and i don;t think that just because they wanted to play a free show they are sellouts..neccessarily. i also don;t really think jack white is into publicity stunts, maybe just showmanship-ish drama. he seems to live and breathe the music to me.

but that;s probably just me. call me naive if you wish, but i still think they fucking rock.

They do fucking rock and being into publicity stunts doesn't mean that Jack isn't also totally into the music. Sometimes it's funny to play with the media...sometimes you just want to get as many people to check out your band as possible...soemtimes you really want to be famous. None of that seems to have changed the way the White Stripes play. Their new album is done, was recorded in a week, and for a couple thousand dollars. Sound like a sell out?

PS: I also love that cover of Jolene. I don't think it's funny in the least. It's evil.
