MORE ARTSY LESS FARTSY

Postby trainwreck » Mon Mar 08, 2004 1:07 pm

do we have a thread for great artists discovered through music?
I nominate...
Raymond Pettibon (Black Flag,Minutemen, old SST in general)-great black and white line drawings with odd captions...
Nick blinko (Rudimentary Peni)-truly institutional dsychotic detailed line drawings
Victor Gastelum (Calexico)-detailed stencil artwork
Derek Hess (lots of metal bands)-pen and Ink,I dunno how to describe, just good...
I know Ive missed a bunch...
GO!
oh yeah, how can I forget Pushead (Misfits,Septic Death, tons of metal/skatepunk)

vaughn oliver... his artwork for the pixies really emphasized their dark, somewhat sinister vibe...

frank kozik... i really love his posters... i have a fab spiritualized poster he did...

marco almera... really fun and sexy stuff...

robert williams... kookiest mofo around... can be hillarious and disturbing, often in the same painting... i first heard of him in a chili peppers song, then looked him up and realized i had seen his work, just never known his name..

Tobin Sprout from GBV does great photorealist painting. At least one of his solo records (not recommended) contains this art.

exitstencil press from the folks at CRASS, now the stuff seems overdone because of millions of copycats...But it was a bit more groundbreaking then Image

and in teh same vein...Winston SMith (Dead Kennedys et al.) Image

or John Yates/Stealworks (Allied Recordings, a lot more modern punk stuff)

His artwork for Converge was amazing. He did a poster for my brother's old band, Premonitions of War when they played in Cleveland that is awesome.

J. Gnewikow (sp?) from the Promise Ring (I know, I know) does a lot of the artwork for releases on Jade Tree Records that is actually really good.

Aaron Turner (ISIS, Lotus Eaters) does some amazing design work for his label, Hydra Head Records.

Jacob Bannon of Converge is incredible. See Converge's Jane Doe album.

I always liked Peter Saville's artwork with Joy Division and New Order. "Closer" is a great album cover. And I don't remember his name, but the guy who does all of KMFDM's album covers is really good.
