Best "Kick-In's"

Postby jp » Wed May 19, 2004 5:46 pm

That pause thread made me consider another aspect of the pause; when the tune kicks back in of course. To me, its even better when a song suddenly erupts from a trippy intro or bridge. Off the top of my head:

Queen/Bohemian Rhapsody after the crazy voc's in the middle. No one can deny banging their head to that one at some point.

Steppenwolf/Magic Carpet Ride

Led Z./Over the Hills and Far Away (and sooo many more)

Weezer/Getchoo (sounds like a chainsaw burning rocket fuel the instant before the first notes.)

Metallica/Blackened

Ween/Exactly Where I'm at// They have some sort of flange/dampening effect on the drums with this little tom diddy going on through the first half of the first verse and once it takes off it sounds HUGE. Though it is definately not my favorite Ween tune, but it ranks very high on my kick-in chart.

Material Issue/Off the Hook My best guess is that they used two phones pointed receiver to reciever mouth to ear so the phone sound would eventually generate a sort of wierd echoey feedback. Then they use the off-the-hook-tone as a rhythm instrument in the choruses. Telecommando Americano is a fucking great album BTW.

There are many more of course so enough outta me....

Jane's Addiction, "The Ocean Song"--sort of Zeppelin-esque. As you note Zeppelin were the dynamics masters.

The Smashing Pumpkins on a number of occasions: "I Am One" leaps to mind.

Constantines "Nightime/Anytime It's Alright" has a good 'un.

My favorite kick-in--though it's really a kick-off, I guess--is PJ Harvey's "Long Snake Moan," where she just says "mm-hm" and then the band KICKS in. One of my favorite hard rock songs of all time!

Maybe you mean kick-BACK ins?

A good recent one is "There's No Home For Here" by the White Stripes. Love that song!

The song "U*G*L*Y" by Fishbone starts all slow and plodding and then kicks into a hyper-driven ska rave-up. Sweet.

The Eels - 'Last Stop: This Town'.

"'m gonna fly on down/
for the last stop to this town/
What?/
I'm gonna fly on down then fly away/
Well, alright."

When the bridge kicks in with that wicked, funky slam, it makes you want to jump up and do the robot. I fucking love that song.

The Wrens- Happy

A very slow song, very depressing, that towards the end starts to build til suddenly it's in this mad frenzy and the singer is REALLy mad and the guitars are going crazy.

Always freaks people out at their shows who aren't familiar with the song. I love watching people's reactions. hehe
