Pete Townshend arrested for kiddie porn!

Postby WHO? » Mon Jan 13, 2003 5:27 pm

Rock star Pete Townshend (news) of The Who has been arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children, police said Monday.

Scotland Yard announced that a 57-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of making and possessing indecent images of children and of incitement to distribute indecent images of children.

Police, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the suspect was Townshend. He has not been charged with a crime. Under British law, suspects are not charged immediately upon arrest, and some people are eventually released without charge.

Townshend, 57, said Saturday he had used an Internet Web site advertising child pornography.

He made the admission after a newspaper reported detectives were investigating an unidentified British rock star for downloading child pornography.

Police said they arrested Townshend under the Protection of Children Act after executing two searches at a business and a home in Richmond, Surrey, the town outside London where he lives. They said they took computers from the home and were examining them.

Townshend was being held at a southwest London police station.

Townshend said in his Saturday statement that he was not a pedophile and only used the porn site once while doing research for an autobiography dealing with his own suspected childhood sexual abuse.

Townshend helped form The Who in London in the early 1960s and wrote most of the band's hits. The title character in Townshend's 1969 rock opera "Tommy" — a deaf, dumb and blind pinball wizard — is sexually abused by an uncle.

Their parade of hits included "I Can See For Miles," "Pinball Wizard," and "Won't Get Fooled Again."

Earlier Monday, a group of police officers arrived at Townshend's Richmond home, one carrying a plastic crate containing packaging to store potential evidence.

Townshend's arrest came as part of Operation Ore, a crackdown on people who view child pornography on the Internet.

British police have arrested 1,300 suspects as part of the sweep, including a judge, magistrates, dentists, doctors and a deputy school headmaster. Fifty police officers also have been arrested, and eight of them have been charged with offenses.

Operation Ore is the British arm of an FBI (news - web sites)-led operation that traced 250,000 suspected pedophiles around the world through credit card details they used to pay for downloading child pornography. The names of British suspects were passed on to police in Britain by U.S. investigators.

Townshend's friend, the model Jerry Hall (news), said Sunday he was an "avid supporter" of child welfare charities and had spoken at length about the dangers of child pornography on the Internet.

I'm your wicked Uncle Ernie
I'm glad you won't see or hear me
As I fiddle about
Fiddle about
Fiddle about!

Ahem, that's not funny.

I'd be inclined to give Townshend the benefit of the doubt; his explanation that he found this material while doing research is at least credible; to test this out you can do some surfing on the topic using a standard search engine, and before you know it, some of this shit can find its way into your cache and even your inbox if you leave it open before jumping off to do searches. One of the other things that lends credibility in my opinion is that, according to one of the news stories I'd read, he actually reported the material to the authorities himself.

'Dont' know if all of this is true, but as a musician and creative artist whose work i respect, I would certainly hope it is. For now, I suspend judgement.

I too was doing some "research" last night - and I was horrified at the amount of child pornography that was readilly available. My 8 year old nephew was likewise horrified at this sickening display when I pulled his mouth from my raging member and showed him the horror on my computer screen. Guess I am going to have to join a few sites with my credit card to see just how bad this stuff really gets.

We're with you all the way Pete!!!

Whoa there. Note to John Ashcroft: the above message is a joke (I hope).

Regardless of what the outcome is, Pete has essentially become the sort of creature that mopes out onto the set of "The Jerry Springer Show." Sad.

Alright, enough thought has occurred and enough emotion subsided that I can answer this matter somewhat lucidly now...

Pete was (and is) one of my rock 'n roll heroes. Back when I was 8 years old, I got Tommy, the original double LP with the honeycomb cover. That's it; 300 LPs, 200 7"s, and more than 1300 CDs later, it's safe to say that I've sold my soul to rock 'n roll. All that time, I saw what Pete did, heard what he recorded, read what he said in the press, went to the '89 Who Revue at Alpine Valley, and laughed whenever Pete got a little too pretentious. The reason I've always been able to laugh at it is that he always seemed so earnest whenever he was expounding at length about sci-fi rock operas that prophesied the Internet, or whatever that year's flavor was. Jaded at times, cynical occasionally, always somewhat sarcastic, but since this was the guy who gave us "I Can't Explain", "5:15", and "Go To The Mirror, Boy!", I've always been able to cut him some slack.

Seeing the jam he's got himself stuck in now, I really want to be able to keep on cutting him some slack. But this is serious; anyone who pays for child pornography is either a) very disturbed and should take precautions that their "problem" (call it what you will) doesn't affect the rest of society, or b) sick predatory fucks who oughta be castrated. I'm hoping that in Pete's naivete, he simply paid for pornography that he shouldn't have, in the name of research. I hope this isn't a chronic behavior for Pete.

There's another sticky issue here, too: in the best case scenario, let's say Pete is exonerated of all charges, the authorities say, "Sorry for the troubles, carry on with your life." Pete is stuck with the stain and the stigma. PETE CHARGED WITH CHILD PORN will sell more newspapers than PETE EXONERATED OF CHILD PORN CHARGES. This very well may continue to be a black mark, even if Scotland Yard apologizes. For instance, Waddy Wachtel got arrested on similar allegations, and it got widely reported. He was later exonerated; I had to search the Internet high and low to find that. That's not fair to Waddy; neither would it be fair to Pete.

Gary Glitter deserves what he got; let's hope Pete doesn't. That would break my heart, and might catalyze me to recontextualize all of Pete's body of work towards a more negative view.
