New Fratellis video: Stand Up Tragedy

Video: The Fratellis -- “Stand Up Tragedy”

The Fratellis - Stand up Tragedy (Official Video)

From In Your Own Sweet Time, out March 9 on Cooking Vinyl.

The Fratellis were one of those bands that nobody took seriously when they released their debut album, Costello Music, but I really liked it. They were a major label band with a song in an iPod ad. It didn’t help, of course, when the Chicago Blackhawks adopted “Chelsea Dagger” as their goal song during their Stanley Cup run in 2010. A bit uncool, yeah?

Still. You gotta love bands from Scotland, and it’s a good album whether or not a bunch of mooky hockey fans sing along with the chorus of a song that may or may not be about falling in love with transvestite prostitute drug addict. Subversive!

I saw them at Lollapalooza 2007 and they were great, and I bought their second album, Here We Stand, when it came out and then stopped paying attention. Apparently, they took a little break after that but have been fairly active again since 2013.

The new song is a disco-inspired jam with “Sympathy for the Devil” woo-ooos and the video is a charming romp through a senior center. We’re all older today than we’ve ever been (and now we’re even older…), and I hope that in twenty years I’m having us much fun as the oldsters in this video.

Lollapalooza 2007: Hit it and quit it

Lollapalooza 2007You can’t see everything, and with 130 bands over three days, you wouldn’t want to. I wasn’t very excited about this year’s lineup. In fact, there were less than 25 bands that I was even vaguely interested in, and that’s being liberal with my definition of “interested.” So there was no way that I could spend every waking hour for an entire weekend there. Not this year. Not for three whole days.

I devised a plan which I called “Hit it and quit it.” Get in, see some bands, and get out before I got bored or sunburned or too wasted. I ended up getting sunburned anyway. But I saw some great sets and had a few pleasant surprises, which is all you can really ask for.

Not really, of course. There’s a lot more you can ask for… like good sound and short beer lines, both of which were handled very professionally this year.

Two Great New Videos from the UK

Caught both of these on a recent episode of Subterranean (a show which has been made exponentially better by the firing of its on-air “personality,” Jim Shearer).

First up, here’s the latest offering from the over-hyped (but who cares?) Arctic Monkeys. You don’t need to understand all the lyrics to know they’re still making kick-ass rock and roll.

Quite possibly the best use of booty girls in a music video ever.
