Jet – Live in Nottingham

Jet - Live in Nottingham

Jet at Rock City

Nottingham, England, September 9, 2009

Jet is predictable: they always give 100%. Unfortunately in the UK their popularity is on the wane. They are playing smaller venues, but the near 1,000 fans who turned up tonight knew what to expect and were intent on having as much fun as the band.

They played songs from their new album, Shaka Rock, but it was the songs from the debut album Get Born (“Cold Hard Bitch,” “Are You Gonna Be My Girl”) that ensured that the audience’s energy was at eleven.

Jet – Shine On

Jet - Shine OnJetShine On (Atlantic)

I think Jeff Tweedy summed it up best when Chuck Klosterman made a crack about the King of Indie Rock’s son liking Jet. “Don’t you like rock music?” Tweedy asked. Well, don’t you?

Jet has somehow become the laughing stock of the Cool Elite. Sure, they sometimes look ridiculous in their obvious scruffiness and maybe we heard “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” one thousand times too many last year in every commercial not selling Buicks or prunes, but c’mon, that’s a killer track.

Pitchfork seems to think Jet’s new album is monkey piss. Maybe it is, but just like watching monkeys piss in their own faces, Jet entertains me. It makes me laugh. It makes me contort and jerk around. Shouldn’t rock and roll be as good as monkey piss?

All the usual suspects appear on Shine On: lots of AC/DC worthy screams and guitar tones; ass pounding drums and gut rattling bass; and a couple faggy ballads. What’s not to love? Don’t be an uptight dick.

I had a music-filled weekend, which isn’t unusual by itself. What made this weekend strange is that I saw a bunch of bands that I don’t really care about. A couple of them ended up surprising me. And that’s a good thing.

Jet – Get Born

JetGet Born (Elektra)

This is not a good album. Even if you like the hit song, “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” you’re not going to like the rest of this album. I understand why that song has its detractors. It reeks of major-label bandwagon jumping to sign their own version of a white-striped retro rock band. Sure, it borrows its riff from Iggy Pop. But still, can you really deny that it’s a good song? I can’t. I like it. And it’s definitely one of the most fun moments of 2003 on MTV2’s Subterranean. I like garage rock. I like the Rolling Stones. I’ve liked this kind of music since before Jack White was playing drums in Goober and the Peas. I don’t care if it’s trendy now. I don’t care if it’s a fad that’ll be “over” by the end of the summer. It’s the kind of stuff I like. And “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” is a fine garage rock single.

But the album is awful. Get Born is a classic example of why kids these days do not purchase cds: all filler, no killer. Download the single, put it on a mix and forget about Jet. Their album is worthless. How many puss-rock ballads can a band put on a record before the album becomes a puss-rock record and they become a puss-rock band? You can tell that they’re going for the mid-seventies stoner vibe, but none of it works. There are no other songs with even half the driving rhythm and balls-out spontaneity as the single.

In one of the less lame songs on the album, Jet tells us to “Take It or Leave It.” You know what to do. Leave it. And do yourself a favor and go listen to some real Detroit rock and roll.
