Stream the new Riviera album

Over the next couple of months, you’re probably going to hear us talking a lot about the new Riviera album, Capital (GLONO-0007). Its official release date is November 21, and we’ve already told you that you can pick it up early at the Black and Orange Ball on October 21. But now, since we know you’re just as impatient as we are, you can actually

stream the entire album for free! Dig it, and be sure to let us know what you think.

You can pre-order it now from Amazon, but it’s only fair to tell you that it’ll be available cheaper elsewhere a little later…

The Black and Orange Ball: GLONO’s Fifth Birthday Party

The party of the centuryGlorious Noise is throwing a party, and you’re invited. What’s the occasion, you ask? We’re celebrating five years in publication and the third release on Glorious Noise Records with a big blowout. In fact, we’re having a ball! A Black and Orange Ball, in honor of the colors of our logo and our favorite holiday (as well as a nod to Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball in 1966). This will be the social event of the season.

Just wait to see what we’ve got in store for you. Three great bands, and loads of other entertainment, prizes, and excitement for you. Space is limited so get there early to be guaranteed a spot. Previous Glorious Noise events have sold out and had poor saps lined up outside in the rain! Don’t let that be you.

In addition to Glorious Noise recording artists Quasar Wut-Wut and Riviera (who will be selling their new CD a few weeks early), this year we hired headliners Healthy White Baby! For the uninitiated, HWB is Danny Black, front man and main songwriter for the Bloodshot artists The Blacks, Laurie Stirratt, bassist and singer for Blue Mountain, and Ryan Juravic on drums. To get an idea of what they sound like, check out “It’s Over”, and they’ve got more mp3s on their site.

Details!

Who: You and your closest friends along with with Healthy White Baby, Riviera, and Quasar Wut-Wut

What: The Black and Orange Ball, presented by Glorious Noise, $12

Where: Martyrs’ in Chicago, 3855 N. Lincoln Avenue

Dress up! We’ll even provide you with an elegant black mask if you don’t have one. But if you want to dress crazy, like a gorilla or a zombie, go for it. If you’re more comfortable in a suit or a dress, live it up. Jeans and a t-shirt? No problem. The point is to have a ball. So dress for a party, whatever that means to you.

It’s a rock and roll but it’s also a masquerade ball, so go nuts!

Fucked: the Motor City Music Conference

Motor City Music Conference“If you aren’t local, they’ll shit all over you,” he screamed in my right ear. Matt Southwell had brought his band Bang Sugar Bang back to his home state to make an appearance at the Motor City Music Conference. Their showcase the night before had been plagued with overrun set times and rescheduled bills that favored local talent at the expense of traveling bands and now he was drunk…and pissed.

The Motor City Music Conference started off with such high hopes. Here was a South By Southwest-style music conference coming to Detroit, a city with such a rich musical heritage that it seemed silly there hasn’t been a premier event like this going on forever. Growing up in Michigan, I root for Detroit. I pull for it and want it to have the fabled turnaround we all know is just around the corner. When I heard about the Conference, I was genuinely excited and fully expecting a professional event that would highlight what a cool city Detroit really is. On paper, it was all set: big named headliners; professional, experienced promoters; a wide variety of workshops and acts. This was going to be it. Can you tell I’m a Lions fan?

Glorious Noise Release Party Wrapup

Very nice, very nice, very nice...Glorious Noise Presents…

Riviera CD Release with Quasar Wut-Wut and Paper Airplane Pilots

Schubas, Chicago, April 2, 2005

The release party for the second album on Glorious Noise Records was a fantastic success. We’re so happy that so many of the GLONO faithful were able to attend, and it was great to meet a bunch of new people! We truly appreciate everyone who came out to celebrate with us.

Paper Airplane PilotsIt was a really fun night with three awesome performances by the bands. Paper Airplane Pilots kicked things off and made those of us who had money on Michigan State forget about our losses for a while. The Pilots’ brand of power pop is no tired Big Star wanna-be bullshit (although they rocked a great cover of “Back of a Car”), but a unique slow-burn, moody groove. Great stuff, and they definitely won over the crowd.

Quasar Wut-WutQuasar Wut-Wut was up next, and they put on one of the most blistering sets of their careers. They completely ruled the stage, and once again made us proud to have them heading up the GLONO roster. Taro Sound is an amazing album, and when you hear those songs live they just go to a whole new level. Several people who had never seen them live before told me afterwards that they were absolutely floored by how great they were. Their mind-altering cover of the Stones’ “Heartbreaker” was a highlight of the set, as was their very special surprise.
