Video: Ryan Adams – Lucky Now

As noted in our review of Ryan Adams’ new album, things are looking up for our favorite Americana shit stirrer. Proof lies in the music and apparently the old chap is confident enough in the material to put out a good old fashioned music video. Don’t try too hard to decipher the symbolism, just enjoy the shots of Ry-Ry scootin’ around town in an old Cadillac while menacing looking Pink Ladies cruise the streets looking for trouble. I’d like to see this album sell if only to buy the poor dude some furniture.

New Jon Spencer Blues Explosion Super Bowl Ad: Black Betty

Video: Jon Spencer Blues Explosion – “Black Betty” (VW ad)

It all comes back to the intersection of art and commerce… Or rather: cars and rock and roll. Over the past ten years we’ve spent a lot of time discussing what it means when a band puts its music in a commercial. From the Clash to Sting, Nick Drake to the Mooney Suzuki, Iggy Pop to Of Montreal, Led Zeppelin to Wilco. As Mac said so eloquently in 2005, we’re all Sometimes Reluctant Hookers.

Ten years on, the concept of “selling out” doesn’t even exist anymore. Which is probably fine, since neither does the concept of “buying music.”

So congratulations to Jon Spencer for getting his band on a Volkswagen ad. A Super Bowl ad, no less! Soon to be iconic, I’m sure.

Big K.R.I.T. – Moon and Stars (Remix)

Video: Big K.R.I.T. – “Moon & Stars Remix” (ft. Curren$y and Killa Kyleon)

Big K.R.I.T. is just stepping onto the national stage, representing Meridian, Mississippi. His first record, K.R.I.T. Wuz Here, shows a young man (24 years old) with huge potential. K.R.I.T. does all his own production work, and there are some songs that really shine on the album. “Moon & Stars” is, in my mind, the best of them (though it’s Devin the Dude on the album version). Curren$y‘s verse in this remix is brilliant. Candy cars, girls, weed, Bun B, and purple drank.

Wanda Jackson – Thunder on the Mountain

Wanda Jackson - The Party Ain't Over No question about it, Jack White’s got style. More than just about anyone else who’s not named Gaga, Jack White understands that an ounce of appearance is worth a pound of effort, and that’s not to say that there isn’t plenty of effort in his work. He just makes it look effortless because he looks so goddamned good doing it.

This first video from his collaboration with rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson is another in a long line of examples with a tasty Dylan cover, “Thunder on the Mountain.” Backing the tiny Jackson with a band decked out in black and pink stage wear, White dances and stomps around his muse like a lovestruck hillbilly. Much like his earlier collaboration with Loretta Lynn, White knows how to embrace the elements and style of a genre without coming off as a parody. As someone who plays a lot of shows with bands with fake accents, I can tell you that ain’t easy to do.

The Party Ain’t Over is available on pre-order from White’s Third Man Records. First 1,000 orders come in an “exclusive Third Man greeting care gatefold sleeve,” 100 of which will randomly come with fuschia colored vinyl. Don’t you just love that sort of thing?

New She and Him video: Don’t Look Back

Video: She & Him – Don’t Look Back from Merge Records

Good heavens, just when you think there’s no way that Zooey Deschanel could possibly get any cuter, she releases yet another video that ramps up her adorability factor once again. I’ve recently been revisiting Nancy Sinatra’s catalog for the first time in a while, and She & Him definitely fit within that tradition. This video premiered on Design*Sponge, which makes sense considering the props, but who can pay attention to the furniture when Miss Zooey is doing the Shimmy?

Talib Kweli – Get By

Video: Talib Kweli – “Get By”

Like most God fearing Americans, I’ve been spending a lot of time the past several weeks listening to Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. It’s got me reflecting on what a great producer he is. In fact, I think he’s arguably the greatest producer in hip hop history. Not only does he create incredible beats for his own work, but he’s put together some of the best instrumental tracks for other rappers like Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Drake, Common, and others.

“Get By” by Talib Kweli is a case in point. Off Kweli’s album Quality from 2002, Kanye samples Nina Simone and Love to create the beat, and it has a great original chorus to boot. Talib is a great rapper, and you hear it in this track. Yes, it’s from 2002, but you can hear Kanye’s and Talib’s genius in this one. Give it a listen.

Movie Review: TRON Legacy

Video: Orangechair.tv – “TRON: Legacy”

TRON: Legacy brings us back to the grid, but the game has changed. It is one of the most visually appealing movies of the year and sports an amazing score from Daft Punk, but the plot lacks the substance to hold up to repeat viewings.

Daft Punk presents a score that turns an otherwise dull movie into a spectacular two-hour music video. The result is a fusion of Hans Zimmer’s Inception and Trent Reznor’s The Social Network scores with an extra dash of adrenaline.

The Who Recording Pictures of Lily

Video: The Who recording “Pictures of Lily”

This is really cool footage of the Who laying down one of their best songs— and arguably the best song about masturbation ever recorded by anybody, although there are too many great ones to say for sure. The most surprising thing to me is seeing how hard Keith Moon is concentrating on his parts, both on vocals and behind his drums. Maybe I’m an idiot, but I had always pictured Moonie just flailing around in the studio like Animal from “The Muppet Show.” I suppose it takes a lot of work to sound that maniacal.
