Five From the Archive: Ween in 2011

We’ve covered Ween on Glorious Noise before, back when they played the Royal Oak Music Theater in 2010…

1. Ween – “Roses Are Free”. A great song in its own right, but also noteworthy as the Ween cover Phish rolls out pretty regularly. It’s from the classic 1994 album Chocolate and Cheese. Full show: April 14, 2011 – War Memorial, Nashville, TN

2. Ween – “The Mollusk”. Some seriously ELP style keyboard action going on in this one. He’s using a wheel or similar mechanism on the keyboard to bend notes. In an appropriately cheesy prog rock seventies kind of way. There’s a bit of a psychedelic meltdown in the middle, too. Then the clouds clear, and it’s smooth sailing to the end. 3. Ween – “A Tear for Eddie”. Tribute to Eddie Hazel. Full show: July 3, 2011 – High Sierra Music Festival, Quincy, CA

4. Ween – “Bananas and Blow”. The title says it all. Except it doesn’t mention the steel drums. Full show: July 2, 20011 – Les Schwab Ampitheater, Bend, OR

5. Ween – “Flutes of the Chi”. This is from their album White Pepper. From a short acoustic set during the second night of a three night New Year’s run. Full show: December 30, 2011 – Fillmore Auditorium, Denver, CO

While I was trawling through the 2011 selection of Ween shows on the Live Music Archive, I saw a lot of interesting cover choices. More variety than I remember seeing in earlier years, too. So we’ll probably be back with another Ween post sometime soon, with just covers this time around. MP3s courtesy of the Live Music Archive, Ween’s liberal taping policy, and the intrepid tapers who put their lives on the line to bring us the raw, uncut stuff.

Friday night, among other things, was a Mollusk showcase. This is supposedly Gene Ween’s favorite Ween record, and I’ll have to say it’s mine, too. They kicked the night off with “The Golden Eel,” and the set included “Mutilated Lips,” “The Mollusk,” “Buckingham Green,” and “The Blarney Stone.” Christ, that’s like half the album right there.

But The Mollusk showcase wasn’t the only great thing about this show. For instance, there was a smoke machine involved. Who doesn’t love a smoke machine?

Sasquatch! Music Festival Lineup Announced

Sasquatch Festival 2010 Being relatively new to Portland I am still getting up to speed on the various summer festivals out this way. One that gets the most talk is the Sasquatch Festival, which true to Pacific Northwestern ways includes camping in the Columbia Gorge. Getting in and out of this festival can be a challenge, I’m told, but who cares when you can return to your Westy for a nap and a couple veggie burritos?

This year’s line up looks pretty tasty, by the way, including the recently reunited Pavement, Massive Attack, My Morning Jacket, Ween, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Kid Cudi, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Band of Horses and others.

Marking it’s ninth year, this year’s Sasquatch Festival returns to The Gorge in Quincy, WA May 29-31 (Memorial Day Weekend).

Tickets go on sale Saturday, February 20 at 10:00am through TicketMaster (booo!!!).

Camping is available for May 28, 29, 30 and 31 and can also be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com

Various – The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Music from the Movie and More (Sire)

Kid flicks that appeal to both parents and kids are a rarity, and the same brand of TV shows are only slightly more tolerable. When some Hollywood goons noticed square yellow keyrings hanging from the rearview mirrors of a few college jokers, the execs realized that the SpongeBob movie had a rare potential to please the kiddies and be simultaneously hip as Hell.

Alright, some people got suckered into seeing it and surely, some people have been suckered into buying the soundtrack. But you’re smart, you guessed it, it’s half for the college crowd with tracks by the Flaming Lips, the Shins, Wilco, and Ween, and the kid/adult gap is strategically buffered with a short and semi-tolerable cut by the age-bracket-defying moneymaker Avril Lavigne. The rest is like using fine beach sand instead of ClearEyes.

Do yourself a favor: get the good songs from iTunes for $4.95 and put them on your iPod. You know which songs to get. Anyway, if you or your kid needs a SpongeBob fix, flip on the TV show. If your kid wants to get the soundtrack, just dig out something equally child-friendly, like Ween’s classic Chocolate and Cheese (just ignore the parental warning) and that will end it, hopefully for good.

Warning: SpongeBob apparently advocates tolerance toward homosexuality! Gasp…
