George Harrison, Dead at 58

George Harrison portrait by Astrid KirchherrWhen I was in high school I had a very serious argument with my best friend over who was the coolest Beatle. My friend said John. I said Paul. Several years ago, we admitted to each other that we had been wrong. The coolest Beatle is and always has been George Harrison. May he rest in peace.

  1. I’m surprised how much this news bothers me. When I heard this morning I was instantly taken back to the moment that I heard the news that John had been killed. Not much more to say, really.Peace

  2. I hadn’t heard the news until I read this. Funny that last night I got this impulsive feeling that I wanted to listen to the Beatles. And I did: The Beatles 1967-1971 is on my record player right now.You know, I never really liked The Beatles too much–and I still don’t. I respect them for the way they changed music/the world, but I am just not that fond of a lot of their music. The exception is their George stuff.

  3. It’s funny how you get associated to things. The first email I got this morning was from an old highschool girlfriend. She was actually writing to tell me she was sorry to hear about George’s death. Back in highschool I was a complete Beatle maniac, funny because it was twenty plus years after the group had disbanded. To our highschool friends, Jake and I are forever stamped as Beatles fans. And though I’ve since developed obsessions for other groups, I felt a pang of grief when I heard George was dead. All things must pass away.

  4. The thing that always cracks me up is when fogies say, “Were you even alive when they were together?” My new response is, “No I wasn’t, motherfucker. Were you alive when Beethoven and Mozart were doing shit?”But I’m still a Beatles fan. The fact that I skip past almost every single Paul song on Revolver now proves that I’m a different kind of Beatles fan than I was in high school. But I still consider myself a fan. A big one too. Some of my favorite George songs: Not Guilty, I Me Mine, Think for Yourself, Only a Northern Song, It’s All Too Much, Old Brown Shoe.

  5. Give it up Phil, You were in high school only 15 years after they broke up! You ain’t THAT young. Don’t try to go deceivin’ all these millions of young female Glo No readers, now!

  6. Actually, I thought the same thing as soon as I posted that. I knew someone would bust me on it, I thought it would be Jake but he’s obviously trying to pull some young hotties too.D. PhillipsNorthview HS Class of ’89

  7. George gone where he and John can share a good smoke!”Here Comes the Sun”, cheers George for a gem of a tune.”The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood,For nothing now can ever come to any good.” -W.H.Auden

  8. I just came across this page and it been a while since George died, but I felt I had to say something. I’ve been a big Beatles fan since I was young, and I was born like 7 years after John was shot. I get alot of critisism from alot of my friends for being a Beatles fan, because they’re all into the heavy metallic and rap shit. But I tell them, if you look at alot of the groups today, in some how or some way they’ve all been influenced by what the Beatles did in some way. I always tell the “metal heads” that Nervana was extremely influenced by them and so were the Smashing Pumpkins. But there is a cool side to some people I meet. I’ve come across the company of a few people who’ve actually heard of the Beatles and say they were the “bomb” So not every one in todays fad forgets something as wonderful as what these four men did. Even if it was 40 years ago today. But hats off to George, quiet yet loud in his love for life. I’ve always had to tuggle my way of trying to determine who my favorite Beatle was. It was always a tie between John and George. I guess it was because I loved the guitar and my father played guitar, so like little kids do they go for things that are familiar. And now that George is gone I realize how much the world and I will miss him. And even though John was gone before I entered, its still saddining to know how he went out.

Well not much els to say, and I hope I passed the audition.
