One morning a few months ago, I flipped on the TV and was caught by the image of a woman who looked incredibly tough and mean. Demuting to learn why this contemptuous vixen was being featured on morning TV, I found I was on NBC and the snarling woman was Lisa Marie Presley. Then it made sense. Lisa Marie Presley is an American icon, even though at the moment she may come across as the sullen product of a broken, dysfunctional home. No matter! Elvis Presley is American royalty and so, by extension, is his daughter, who’s working hard lately to promote a recording career of her own.
Until recently, she’s been famous only for being the daughter of the King of Rock and Roll, and then for being the tranced-out wife of the King of Pop. Now she’s out on her own as a singer, and while she’s not very talented, she’s totally fascinating.
Can she sing? From what I could hear, no. It’s sad, truly. She’s inherited virtually nothing of her father’s velvety pipes. But she has something almost more interesting. She’s tough and self-protective, which Elvis never was. She’s not going to smile and play nice, which Elvis always did. She grew up in a decadent, unhappy environment and she’s not going to tell one nice lie about it. “Who’d you get comin’ over to the house?” David Letterman asked her on a recent appearance, maybe thinking she’d reminisce about some show-biz legends. “Groupies,” she said flatly. “Groupies, and a bunch of married men who went with them.” “So… that gave you an early education, didn’t it?” Letterman, one of the few talk show hosts who listens to the deep meaning of his guests’ responses, said. “It gave me a real early education,” Lisa Marie replied evenly. “It made me see the world was sick long before I could cope with it,” she could have added. She didn’t, but it was implicit in her cool, polite non-smile.
See, that’s the shocking thing about Lisa Marie Presley. She’s a girl singer who doesn’t do girl things. She hardly ever smiles, and she speaks in a low voice. Those two facts alone make her seem like a fascinating, subversive rebel. In an era of ubiquitous squealy-high speaking voices, Lisa Marie’s low, unexcited tones and stony deadpan come across as almost insolent. But she’s not unfriendly, just terminally unsurprisable. She’s seen it all (remember, she was married to Michael Jackson). Resembling each of her parents equally, she seems to be fighting a battle to lay claim to herself. Anyone who was touched by Elvis Presley’s dazzling talent and troubled fall will be struck by Lisa Marie’s solution to being his daughter: Eyes narrowed, face inscrutable, she seems to be watching out for danger like her father never did.

Her voice is monotonous, literally—she seems to have about a three-note range. But the attitude she cut when uber-weeny Matt Lauer came, supplicant-like, onstage to talk to her! Casting bored, patient eyes on him, Lisa Marie was kind enough to rustle up reasonable, if brief, replies to his questions. “Is the album more ___ or more ____?” he cried earnestly, as if his life depended on her answer. “It’s just—the way it is,” she said. Calm. She was indifferent to him. But when he mentioned the fans, she flashed them a smile and it was clear that this is where Lisa Marie’s heart lies.
She loves the fans. Not only loves, but respects (unlike the entertainment media). When she slipped on a rainy step and fell during her Today Show appearance, she was quickly back on her feet, flashing a grin to reassure everyone and alleviate her own embarrassment. Signing autographs, she was the picture of amiability. She wasn’t withholding herself from these people. They’re the ones who get her warmth, not anyone who feeds professionally on the celebrity business. There’s an integrity to that, as there is in her cool, unexcited approach to playing the daughter of a legend. Who knows where her singing career will take her? It’s the personality, functioning in the media glare, that’s fascinating to watch.
One of the interesting aspects of this is that the daughter can’t sing, the mother can’t act, the father has been dead for years, yet the first two continue to get run. Although, as Kristy points out, Lisa Marie may be kinder to those, unlike, say, Matt Lauer, who don’t “feed professionally on the celebrity business,” it seems that if it wasn’t for said business, Lisa Marie might be waiting tables at a Cracker Barrel.
You are way too kind to a not talent hack. I don’t care if she is the closest thing to American royalty we have left. Her drugged-up, “I hate the world” stare and standoffishness, is even more repulsive then Jack White’s or Ryan Adams’. The only difference is that the latter two put out music good enough to make me forget for an hour, that their attitudes warrant them little more than to be smacked around by a couple of burly cross-dressers and left in the gutter on Bourbon Street.
Oh Anonymous, Anonymous, what is wrong with you? Have you even SEEN ‘The Naked Gun’? Priscilla is no “not talent hack.” There’s no way White or Adams could EVER call Leslie Nielson “funny face” in such a bittersweetly romantic way! Shame on you for disgracing one of our greatest actresses!

I definitely wouldn’t call Priscilla a great actress but she’s a grieving mother so I won’t say anything negative, but acting should not be her day job and it isn’t from what I can see. Condolences to her for losing her only daughter. But Lis Marie came across as a depressed person. Lisa also said she had been raped at Graceland when she was 14. Stars need to have protection around their kids at all times.

Lisa is wonderful. She is very unique and isn’t fake, bright, and silly like the other female artists all over the industry now. She brings something different for us to enjoy, a calmer, more somber approach to music. Her voice is very different and very lovely. Her self-confidence is respectful and her toughness is a wonderful quality. I’d rather my 12 year old girl take after her than someone like Britney Spears. Lisa is a tough lady, who doesn’t let the world kick her around. She is very real and very talented. Anyone who takes the time to really listen to her music will see that. It is obvious to me that Kristy has never seen Lisa perform live. I was very impressed with her live show. And must we forget that this is a woman who grew up with alot of unwanted attention. She did not ask to be put in the spotlight for her entire life but she has dealt with it the best that she can. How dare we judge how we would act if we had been born the child of someone famous. She wrote every song on the album and let’s face it, she does not need the money from doing this. But still she got on a bus and did the tour with Chris Isaac just like any newcomer would have done. That to me shows that she is taking this seriously and would like to be taken seriously for her music, not for who her family is. With all the shit and all the tabloid rumors that have been floating around about her for years I understand her having an attitude and do not blame her one bit for it. Lisa is extremely talented singer and song writer. Kristy do you have a recording contract? Lisa is a great person and she is out there for the people that appreciate her and her music. Actually, it kind of was a review. That Kristy lady felt that she needed to open up her mouth and dissect everything she knew about Lisa Marie Presley (which, in reality, wasn’t that much). I may not have been around long enough for some of the music greats, but I have heard enough of music to know that all artists get better with time and practice. Lisa has been getting better every time she gets on stage and does a live performance. And she was pretty damn good to start with if you consider she never had the luxury to perform in front of small groups of people.

I’ll admit it. My view is biased because I am a fan of Lisa Marie Presley. But bias only goes so far. When you go out of your way to put down and make someone look like a mean person who’s in something for the wrong reasons, it’s more slander than review. Review is simply to say something good, bad, or neutral, and then back it up. It’s been said earlier, “thats what you call taste.” But if you dislike someone so much that you have to make them come off as someone unfavorable to be around, then why do you bother? Kristy Eldredge, the author, didn’t feel the need to research before writing the article. True, “This isn’t a ‘news’ site where journalistic integrity trumps emotion, but a little integrity wouldn’t hurt once in a while. It doesn’t matter if you have opinions, but when opinions hurt people you really don’t know anything about, then you should just learn to keep it to yourself. I know it sucks when someone doesn’t like someone that you like or admire, but it shouldn’t have to feel like someone you like or admire is being trashed by people with nothing better to do than talk trash.

Everyone hates a middleman, but here I am.
Lisa Marie’s just getting her feet wet. She’s put out a single album and, for all of its obvious weaknesses, let’s remember she wrote every word on it. Kudos to her. As for the voice, there’s a real power to it, it’s unique, and it’s something that doesn’t exist in music today. The songs aren’t horrible, but they aren’t exactly great. Give her some time to get out from behind the produced sound of it all and perhaps she’ll surprise us with the next try through. Personally, I think she’s best when she’s casting fate to the wind and whining about Graceland or the fact she was the one who broke up her family and she’ll never forget it (check out the hidden track). There’s a reason why RCA didn’t put her album out, kiddos. Maybe it’s because they felt she didn’t have the same kind of talent. I choose to think it’s because she refuses to cowtow to the bigwigs. I doubt she ever will.
And, as far as these diehard fans go, they really have nothing to base it on. Yet. They’re akin to the fans who were buying into Elvis’ music when it was waning significantly during his final years, simply because of who it was. That’s some blind devotion. And, while the captain of the ship appreciates your support, you just may all end up going down with the ship when you least expect it. I’m not sure what that means either. Chew on it a while and get back to me once you figure it out.

I was a fan of the King, Elvis. I had to buy Lisa’s new cd, only because I was courious about how she sounds, I was disappointed to say the least. All I can say is, maybe her son will follow in grandfathers footsteps.

Firstly I would like to say that like Kirsty when I first heard LMP sing on TV I thought she sucked HANG ON lol. I happened to give her a chance because I adored her album (it got to me and I couldn’t stop playing it)
I have heard her sing live on several occasions now. On British TV Top Of The Pops and in concernt and I CAN say that LMP can sing. In fact her range is amazing. Not many female singers can sing the notes Lisa hits and the tone and gravel to her voice is fantastic.
She is beautiful, crazy and honest and PEOPLE hate that.
I do not think Kirsty was really slamming Lisa because she doesn’t know her or her music. I think if Kirsty saw her live she would write a very different review.

I’m with Andrea, I used 2 be a LMP hater. Possibly because i’m such a hardcore Michael Jackson fan. I really didn’t know who she was until just recently, to me she was just “the pretty girl who married Michael Jackson”. When I first saw her video “Lights Out” when it debuted on VH1, I hated her from the door. I was one of those who thought she sounded like a man, but hey not everyone has 2 sound like Britney Spears. I mean give the woman a break! Then I heard her album and I was truly blown away! Now i’m hardcore Lisa fan as well. I never got 2 see her live, or meet her backstage, but from her interviews she sounds like a nice person. Hopefully I’ll get 2 meet her 1 day. And 4 whoever wrote this article in the first (i foget her name) yes Lisa does love her fans, and we adore her right back! yes i can say i like lisa & not her mother . the only reason lisa probably most likely turned out as good as she did is cause her grandfather was around alot as she was growing up. so get your eyes focused i didnt say a word how good or bad of a mother priscilla is or was. & i still say she is riding on his coat tails cause she is the 1 that started the the fees to get into graceland & the only reason she was taken in to be an actress is cause she was married to elvis the only talents she had before then was in bed & you too probably . if she wouldnt of cheated on elvis he wouldnt have kissed other ladies. so you go on ahead & uphold the witch but i wont theres plenty of people that agree w/ me . so stfu majesta. see ya
