MGMT – Time To Pretend

Video: MGMT – “Time To Pretend”

I guess this is old news, but I just saw this video for the first time on Subterranean last week (higher-resolution QT version). Holy moly, this is as accurate a portrayal of the how it feels to be on drugs as anything I’ve seen or heard since that first track on Kid A, whatever it’s called.

So who is this MGMT? And how come nobody (I trust) tipped me to them until now? The album, Oracular Spectacular, came out on Columbia (Sony-BMG) in January, but their Time to Pretend EP was released in 2005(!) on an indie label.

They recently re-did the video in 3D, and you can watch that and their appearance on Letterman after the jump…

Make your own 3D glasses (if you don’t already have a pair).

  1. Compelling. Enuff Z’Nuff for the new millenium. I am a cryptozoologist. This video is reminiscent of the way I felt while experimenting with peyote on the Navajo reservation. Saw a “stink beast” that night–not sure if was real or not.

  2. Sounds very reminiscent of “Manic Monday” by the Bangles to me. I’m having the hardest time putting together whether the lyrics are written to be serious or ironic, but with the video it seems like they’re leaning towards serious. Still, a song basically saying “it was nice knowing you mom, but I need to go kill myself by taking massive amounts of drugs now” seems a bit…extreme.

  3. Just fy, it looks as though this video lifts some things from Alejandro Jodorowsky’s “The Holy Mountain.”

Probably one of the best mindf*ck films out there. Especially if you like 70’s era Mexican surrealist cinema bankrolled by John Lennon… which I do.
