Parvenus Only

Tour BusWhile one can’t necessarily draw conclusions about whether or not those of whom participate in or merely peruse GloNo are, in a word, snobs, based on what may be construed as evidence of what’s really hot and what’s not as correlated with the various and sundry top-10 or other significant-whole-number lists shown here certainly provides more than a hint that there are some noses in the air.

Quick question: What concert was number-one in 2007 based on data from Ticketmaster including (1) online page views, (2) information requests, (3) ticket sales?

Time’s up.

It's two girls at a sleepover, and if all of a sudden that's bad, then what is the world coming to?Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Tour.

Did anyone surveyed by GloNo include Ms. Cyrus on their lists?

Nope.

Although the Police were mentioned, not The Police, per se. They followed Ms. Cyrus. Did they get any respect by those making the entries?

Nope.

Kenny Chesney? Dave Matthews Band? Celine Dion? Jimmy Buffett? Rush? Bruce (friggin’) Springsteen and the E Street Band? Bon Jovi? Keith Urban? That would be Nope, Nope, Nope, Nope, Nope, friggin’ Nope, Nope, and Nope.

Makes you wonder about why recorded music sales are plummeting and why arenas aren’t being filled the way they once were, doesn’t it?

Nope.

  1. what is the deal with hannah montana? i’ve heard that people are paying thousands to see her and i simply don’t get it.

when i was 13 years old, my parents paid 60 bucks a ticket so i could see tina turner on her last arena tour, and that STILL seems like a lot of money to me.

damn kids and their rock & roll music *grumblegrumble* stay offa my lawn!

  2. I know one of the radio stations here were having ‘Hannah MAN-tana’ day…which required fathers to dress up like Hannah Montana and they would draw names so their daughters could get tickets.

At what point does a father draw the line and just say “NO.”

  3. I liked the Rush record, but didn’t put it on my best-of list. I ponied up to see my childhood heroes The Police, but they didn’t release any new music. Broooce didn’t bring his tour to my city. The other acts on the list – meh.

    I’m a snob, I’ll cop to that.

I’d say the widening gulf between critical acclaim and mainstream success speaks to the evolution of pop music as a niche-based rather than a mainstream business. Lefsetz’ latest letter points out that the biggest albums today sell only a fraction of what they did just seven years ago.

It’s all about the niche, baby!

  4. When i was 13 I got to several top shelf shows. I was lucky. Both my father and mother had younger brothers who were in their early 20s, wanted to show me how cool they were, and didn’t mind dragging a mullet head kid around with them. Off the top of my head…that year I saw:

    Huey Lewis and the News

    Jefferson Starship

    Kiss w/special guest King Cobra

    Motley Crue

    Ratt

    Billy Squire

When i was a kid i was getting a contact buzz and learning what the fuck Rock n Roll meant. What do kids have to look forward to today? Hanna fucking Montana? Give me a break.

  5. When I was 13, I had the great good fortune to see My Bloody Valentine and the Pixies. This was less due to my taste at the time (though I did like them) and more due to my friend’s older-sister-with-car’s taste. Regardless, I’m trying to imagine ever wanting to see anything like Hannah Montana… count me snotty through and through.
