Daughter Claims Papa John Phillips Had Incestuous Relationship

John Phillips Mackenzie Phillips, teen star of the 70s TV show One Day at a Time, claims she maintained a long-time, consensual sexual relationship with her father, John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas.

Phillips, writes in the book High on Arrival that her father had sex with her on the night before she was to marry Jeff Sessler, a member of the Rolling Stones crew, in 1979.

An excerpt in People magazine states (republished on MSNBC.com):

“On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it,” writes Phillips, who was 19 and a heavy drug user at the time. “I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad’s bed.”

“My father was not a man with boundaries. He was full of love, and he was sick with drugs. I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father.

“Had this happened before? I didn’t know. All I can say is it was the first time I was aware of it. For a moment I was in my body, in that horrible truth, and then I slid back into a blackout.”

Amazingly, the relationship later became consensual and Phillips claims her father wanted to run off to another country together where this sort of thing would be accepted. She pins the on the drug addled fantasies of a sick man but acknowledges her knowing it was wrong all along.

“He was completely delusional. No, I thought, we’re going to hell for this.”

Makes it hard to listen to those songs in the same light, doesn’t it?

UPDATE:

Ex-Wife and Mamas & the Papas member Michelle Phillips doesn’t buy it. She apparently told Roger Friedman of the Hollywood Reporter that Mackenzie has “a lot of mental illness,” and that “she’s had a needle stuck up her arm for 35 years.”

She also suspects the timing of this revelation since the Mackenzie’s book is due out at the same time as her half-sister Chynna Phillips‘ new album.

“Mackenzie is jealous of her siblings, who have accomplished a lot and did not become drug addicts,” Michelle says.

Chynna is thinking the same thing we at GLONO have been wondering. She told Us Magazine that she has no reason to doubt Mackenzie’s story: “I mean, who in their right mind would make such a claim if it wasn’t true?”

Seriously…

Set yer TiVos, Mackenzie is set to talk about the claims to Oprah today.

  1. It seemed like a simple place to score. Then an old lady came to the door–she said Mackenzie Phillips doesn’t live here anymore.

  2. Man, if I hear one more story about a child star who maintained a consensual sexual relationship with her own incredibly drugged-out father, then I – wait, hold on a second here. I just looked up what “consensual sexual relationship” means. According to this ‘dictionary’ that means they… huh. And then they… oh my. Well.

  3. I saw her again last night,

And you know that I shouldn’t

Just string her along; it’s just not right.

    If I couldn’t I wouldn’t.

But what can I do? I’m lonely too.

And it makes me feel so good to know

    She’ll never leave me.

Every time I see that girl,

You know I wanna lay down and die.

But I really need that girl

    Though I’m living a lie.

  4. “I Saw Her Again” came out in 1966. Mackenzie was only 7 then. Hope it didn’t start that early. Did Papa John have a sister? Maybe he was boning her first and wrote that song about it. Funny how southerners and hillbillies get all this shit about being incestuous. Here we have a california hippy rock star being a hideous offender. i wonder how the media would treat this differently if it were say…Hank Williams Junior? Just another hick screwin’ his daughter. But because it’s hollyweird hippies the focus is on the tragedy of the whole thing rather than really laying down the smack on the creep.

  5. yer barkin’ up the wrong tree Schneider. I’m from Kintucky and I done did my first cousin Earlene out in the barn prit near a dozen times. And she’s a whole lot purtier than that Makensee gal.

  6. Hey Rube! Since yer airin’ out the dirty britches ya wanna tell the folks about your teenie weenie pecker. Shoot it’s half the size of the one danglin’ from that pigmee goat Uncle Pooch brought back from the auction last week.

  7. You should curtail your humor a bit. There are visitors to this site that are incest and sexual abuse surviors who don’t appreciate your joking about it.

  8. You are obviously correct that there is nothing funny about being victimized by abuse. However the relationship between Rube and Earlene is clearly consensual.

  9. It was tragic that drugs and the lack of moral compass bye both members of the family. It is something that can be exposed, discussed, and possibly-maybe the people involved see this in a different light. One were blame and fault is not an issue.
