The Neil Young Archives Finally Arrives. Neil’s got a new site: The NYA Post Informer.
I don’t really even know what to say. I didn’t pre-order it because I didn’t want to jinx it. Have you picked it up yet? What version? Blu-ray, DVD, or CD? What do you think?
I was equally superstitious, Jake. I didn’t preorder, but I did book three days of vacation this week. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get my hands on it soon. So far, I’m leaning toward the DVD version.
Let’s see, I can buy compressed crap files on iTunes for $79.99… uh, no way! Or I can shell out $280 for Bluray discs and another $300 for a player… fuck that, two times! The DVD option is “only” $200 and I have a DVD player, but my good amplifier is certainly not the surround sound unit that the DVD player is hooked up to. So that leaves the CDs, which are at least HDCDs and only cost $69.49. Granted I don’t have a CD player with an HDCD decoder, but at least they’ll play on EVERY OTHER CD PLAYER I ALREADY OWN!!! What I really want to know is where are the SACD or DVD-A versions?
I just ordered the CD version (Fathers Day present), and I plan on ordering the Journey Through the Past DVD separately directly from Warner/Reprise/Neil for $25.99, which is more expensive than they were a few weeks ago.

If you don’t think this looks amazing, you’re nuts. Sure, it’s all secondary to the music, but come on. Having access to every piece of ephemera that Neil has collected over the years is pretty fucking cool.
Sure, it’s expensive and absolutely unnecessary to all but the most hardcore of fans…but that’s who this is for. It might be geeky, but how can you call it stupid?

If I already had a Blu-ray system, I’d be all over this shit…happily. I’d actually be playing with it right now instead of arguing on GLONO.
One of the (potentially) coolest parts about the Blu-ray version is how Neil plans on sending additional, free content to you.
I’m not saying it’s cheap. And clearly, to you, it’s not worth it the cost. But it’s dope. Granted, it would be way cooler if Neil just uploaded all the multimedia shit to the internet and allowed us to watch/read/play with it for free.
But if it’s not for you, you don’t need to buy it. I’m personally thrilled that Neil is finally putting it all out there. And I can’t fucking wait for Volume 2 (1973 to whenever)!

I received my CD version this weekend, and I’m making my way through it (with occasional breaks to check out the new Jay-Z).
Amazon has jacked the price on the DVD version back to the $250 MSRP. The CDs have also gone up, but only $2.
