Video of Kurt Cobain in Guitar Hero

In case anyone’s confused about why Dave Grohl, Krist Noveselic, and now reportedly Courtney Love (who approved the deal) would care about the use of Kurt Cobain‘s likeness in Guitar Hero need look no further than this video:

Love has threatened to sue Activision for allowing Cobain to be used in Guitar Hero 5 to sing songs by other artists, which baffles Guitar Hero CEO Dan Rosensweig who told the NME that Cobain’s estate (controlled by Courtney Love) was fully aware of the terms of the contract to license Cobain’s likeness and that she “cashed the check.”

“It’s really not Guitar Hero’s confusion,” said Rosensweig. “We went and spoke directly to the estate and made it crystal clear, got the rights, paid for the rights, and really we’ve done what we’ve always done. The fact that the rest of the band and the estate did not communicate – I’m not aware of those facts [about their communication].”

Courtney Love has been railing about this entire episode via Twitter for a couple weeks now. If you have a spare 18-20 hours a day to sift through her nonsense you can learn a thing or two about how the estate is managed (or not, as the case may be) and also about Courtney’s inflated sense of herself. Yes, she thinks she’s a better lyricist than Jeff Tweedy, Conor Oberst and just about anyone else you can think of that she hasn’t name dropped…yet.

So, now the guy whose entire persona and legacy is based on his despising most of the mainstream music of his day is shown dancing and miming to everything from Flavor Flav to Bon Jovi. We don’t need to imagine Cobain spinning in his grave, we can see him prancing to “You Give Love a Bad Name,” which is maybe appropriate considering what Love is doing to his.

  1. Certain artists need to stop taking themselves so fucking seriously and just Let It Go. Seriously. It’s a dopey video game. It’s not Mohammed singing AC/DC songs about the Devil. All of this righteous indignation after the fact is kind of pathetic. It’s kids “playing” songs with plastic guitars, for fuck’s sake!
