Another New Low: 4.83 Million Albums Sold Last Week

Bill boredHow low can you go? According to Billboard, overall album sales totaled 4.83 million units (that’s physical CDs plus digital album downloads) last week, which is the lowest it’s been since SoundScan started tracking sales. Should we start taking bets on when it will stoop below four million? I predict March of 2011.

1. Sara Bareilles – “Kaleidoscope Heart” – 90,000 (debut)

2. Eminem – “Recovery” – 81,000 (down 12%; cume: 2.5 million)

3. “Now 35” – 63,000 (down 40%)

4. Katy Perry – “Teenage Dream” – 59,000 (down 33%)

5. Disturbed – “Asylum” – 57,000 (down 68%)

6. Stone Sour – “Audio Secrecy” – 46,000 (debut)

7. Interpol – “Interpol” – 38,000 (debut)

8. Justin Bieber – “My World 2.0” – 35,000 (up 14)

9. Anberlin – “Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place” – 31,000 (debut)

10. “Camp Rock 2: the Final Jam” soundtrack – 31,000 (up 11%)

Futher down:

30. Jerry Lee Lewis – “Mean Old Man” – 11,000 (debut)

38. Atmosphere – “To All My Friends, Blood Makes the Blade Holy” – 9,000 (debut)

41. Robyn – “Body Talk Pt. 2” – 8,000 (debut)

44. Florence + the Machine – “Lungs” – 8,000 (up 70%)

• Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Sept. 12) totaled 4.83 million units

• Digital track sales this past week totaled 20.03 million downloads

Another sorry note for the album chart: this week’s #1 is the fifth-lowest sales total for an album in its first week at #1. Paul Grein enumerates the others:

The only albums to sell fewer copies in their first week at #1 were Sugarland’s Live On The Inside (76K), Chrisette Michele’s Epiphany (83K), B.o.B’s B.o.B Presents: The Adventures Of Bobby Ray (84K) and Johnny Cash’s American V: A Hundred Highways (88K).
