Amanda Shires - The Problem (feat. Jason Isbell) – Official Video

Directed by Becky Fluke. Single out now on Silver Knife.

These two! Come on. Tackling a difficult subject with all the empathy you’d expect from two of the most caring and sensitive songwriters in the business, Shires and Isbell put you right there in the room with a young couple figuring out how to deal with an unexpected situation.

Shires told CMT, “The video’s focus on the conversation never drifts and you can really feel the emotion. We recorded the vocals for this while we shot the video.” Wow.

So yeah, pretty raw.

Shires wrote an op-ed on abortion rights for Rolling Stone when “The Problem” was released, and it’s worth reading. Proceeds from the song will go to the Yellowhammer Fund, reproductive justice organization providing services in the Deep South.

Fun fact: That’s Sheryl Crow on bass.

New Amanda Shires video: Deciphering Dreams

Video: Amanda Shires – “Deciphering Dreams”

Amanda Shires - Deciphering Dreams (Official Music Video)

Animated by Delaney Royer. Single out now on Silver Knife.

Warning: This will get stuck in your head. “Deciphering Dreams” is a rifftastic new wave disco jam with melodic hooks galore and powered by Jason Isbell’s unrelenting guitar. The frantic drums, played by Chris Powell, remind me of Kevin Barnes’ work on “Holland, 1945” or Mike Joyce on “The Queen Is Dead.” It’s badass.

Last night I was standing with you in a purple waterfall
You opened your mouth trying to speak
But your voice was just a flutter moths

No word on when the album is coming out, but she’s calling her current tour “Atmosphereless” so that would be a pretty good guess for a title.

Shires co-founded country music supergroup the Highwomen last year with Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, and Maren Morris, and while “Deciphering Dreams” contains pretty much the same instrumental personnel who played on The Highwomen, the sound couldn’t be more different. I guess that’s why those Nashville cats are such pros; they can play anything and make it sound great.

New Highwomen video: Redesigning Women

Video: The Highwomen – “Redesigning Women”

The Highwomen: Redesigning Women [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

Directed by Elizabeth Olmstead. From The Highwomen, due September 6 on Low Country Sound/Elektra.

The Highwomen are Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris, and Amanda Shires. And they’re telling it like it is.

Full-time living on a half-time schedule
Always trying to make everybody feel special
Learning when to brake and when to hit the pedal
Working hard to look good ’til we die

Brandi Carlile told Apple Music, it’s “a song about women in 360 degrees. All of our attributes, all of our flaws. It’s a celebration of everything about us that makes us funny and powerful and who we are.”

The video features cameos from Tanya Tucker and Wynonna Judd and other badass country women.

It seems like it’s got to be getting harder for mainstream country radio programmers to continue to refuse to play songs by female artists as Kacey Musgraves sweeps the Grammys and women “steal the show” at the Newport Folk Festival (which, by the way, was curated by Highwoman Brandi Carlile).

Misogyny runs deep, but it’s exciting to see strong women taking it on and facing it down. Sock it to the man!
