New Charly Bliss video: Hard To Believe

Video: Charly Bliss – “Hard To Believe”

Directed by Henry Kaplan. From Young Enough, due May 10 on Barsuk.

I was nervous that Charly Bliss might have abandoned their guitars on their new album. The first single was a synth-driven nu wave jam, but the guitars are back on this new one. Eva Hendricks is even rocking one of Annie Clark’s signature St. Vincent Ernie Balls (“There is room for a breast…or two!”)

The band says “Hard To Believe” is “about being addicted to a bad relationship, and the endless cycle of trying and failing to end one.”

I’m kissing everything that moves
I’m kissing anything that takes me far away from you
But I would rather eat than starve
I would rather kiss you hard

New Charly Bliss video: Capacity

Video: Charly Bliss – “Capacity”

Directed by Michelle Zauner. From Young Enough, due May 10 on Barsuk.

Look at Eva Hendricks all glammed up and looking like Stassi from “Vanderpump Rules.” Bankrobber chic!

The new song doesn’t have anything to do with the video, unless we’re talking about our personal bank of energy…and how trying too hard to please other people is like robbing yourself of…I dunno.

But it’s still a good message. Cut yourself some slack.

I was raised an east coast witch like
doing nothing’s sacrilegious,
triple overtime ambitious.
Sometimes nothing is delicious.

I miss the crunchy guitars from Guppy. Hope there’s more guitars on the upcoming Young Enough than on this single. We’ll see. Still fun though.

New Charly Bliss video: Scare U

Video: Charly Bliss – “Scare U”

From Guppy, out now on Barsuk Records.

Happy Halloween! Here’s a spooky video wherein the kids from Charly Bliss recreate their favorite Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode, “Doublemeat Palace.” Eva Hendricks told W magazine that she and her boyfriend, Toby Goodshank, made the props themselves.

The song’s not actually scary at all. Unless you’re afraid of pop hooks. Or possible euphemisms regarding elves…

Forced fun, ill at ease
All I eat is bread and cheese
Pink elf, bleed the sheets
I wanna talk about it, but I don’t know what I mean

Be safe trick or treating out there, kids. You never know who’s going to try to grind you up into hamburger!

New Charly Bliss video: DQ

Video: Charly Bliss – “DQ”

From Guppy, out now on Barsuk Records.

I’m four years above sixteen
I bounced so high, I peed the trampoline
I’m too sad to be mean
I’m gonna end up working at Dairy Queen

We’ve all been there. Young, wasted, blacking out, drooling, pissing yourself. Waking up and questioning all your relationships and your entire future. It sucked. But Charly Bliss makes it all sound like a blast! This is a great song and now I’m sad summer’s over.
