Lollapalooza 2010, Day 3: Where’s the Skateboards?

LollapaloozaI had really wanted to sleep in on Sunday. But at 6:30, my three-year-old demanded my attention. “Papa! PAPA! PAH PUHHHHHH!” And with that, my day began. Not atypical for a Sunday morning, but most of my Saturdays these days are not spent running ten miles back and forth across a park all day while pounding beers and falafel.

So we got the idea to bring my kid down to Lollapalooza for a couple hours. We figured we could eat some breakfast, get dressed, and get down there by noon, hang out in the “Kidz” area for a while, take a quick peak at Johnny Marr’s latest band at 2pm, and then head home, drop him off with the sitter, and head back in time for Erykah Badu at 5pm. Perfect plan, right?

Erykah Badu Gets Naked, Sells 110,000 Albums

Erykah Badu - New Amerykah, Part Two: Return of the AnkhJustin Bieber is just like the Beatles! His new album had a second-week increase after debuting at No. 1. The last time this happened (with a seven day sales week) was when the Beatles’ 1 sold 662,000 in its second week back in 2000, compared to 595,000 the week before. So this kid clearly has big things ahead of him. Right?

Erykah Badu – New Ameryka, Pt. 1: 4th World War

Erykah Badu - New Ameryka, Pt. 1: 4th World WarErykah BaduNew Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War (Universal Motown)

The story goes that when Marvin Gaye was making What’s Going On, Barry Gordy sent Smokey Robinson to check up on him to see how the artist was progressing. Smokey became one of Gaye’s staunchest supporters after hearing the results, an ally for Gaye. Gordy wanted nothing to do with the album, feeling it was uncommercial and wouldn’t find support at radio. Of course, Gordy found out how wrong he really was as What’s Going On was not only a hit for Marvin, but also a statement for the times and a creative highpoint.

Gaye told Robinson, “The album wasn’t done by me…It was done by God.”

I wonder if Erykah Badu faced similar concerns and criticism when she presented her fourth album, New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War to Motown. Record sales are woefully down and Badu hasn’t had a major hit in years, so it would come as no surprise if some of Universal’s executives were left scratching their heads when they heard the final product.
