All Good kicked off with a night of homage to the spirit that infuses every jam band festival, the long departed, fondly remembered, and still crucially important Grateful Dead. Former Dead vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux opened the musical celebration, one of several former Dead members scheduled to take the stage this weekend. While many in the audience are here for Friday’s four-hour scheduled performance by Further, Thursday night was the warmup that may overshadow that headliner.

It’s Going To Be All Good

All Good FestivalThe All Good Music Festival, which starts a week from today, has finally posted its schedule here. As expected, headliners are Dark Star Orchestra on Thursday, Furthur on Friday, and Widespread Panic on Saturday, with Keller Williams wrapping things up early on Sunday evening.

I have to say, I’m sad to see George Clinton relegated to the blue-plate-special time of 5:45pm on Saturday, especially since he’s only been given a little over an hour. And what’s with local Ann Arbor homies the Macpodz getting a noon set on Saturday? At least I won’t have to fight a big crowd to see them.

The best news as far as I am concerned is that Grace Potter is scheduled early enough Sunday that I can probably stick around to see her set and still be able to drive back in time for work Monday morning (which is looking like a great day to work from home).

Stay tuned for more All Good coverage, including our big Rothbury ’09 vs. All Good ’10 Battle Royale. Oh, and keep your fingers crossed that Mike Vasquez and I make it back alive.

All Good FestivalTim Walther is the founder of the All Good Festival. He also runs his own promotion company – Walther Productions – and manages Dark Star Orchestra, who we’ve covered here, and will also be playing All Good this year.

The jam band phenomenon (and the festivals that support it) has grown and evolved over fifteen years now, and All Good was at the beginning of it. We put together some questions for Tim about the evolution of All Good and this year’s event (July 8 – 11), which he kindly answered through an email exchange.

It’s all good: The All Good Festival

All Good FestivalWhen I began thinking about putting this preview together, I thought I’d feature two or three bands I was looking forward to seeing at the All Good Festival this summer. But I couldn’t limit it to three. There are truly too many bands I’m really excited about seeing this year.

This is good news, because GLONO will be making the trek to West Virginia for four days of music, fun, and sun, July 8 – 11. Headlining the All Good Festival is Furthur, with Phil Lesh and Bob Weir. I’ve seen them twice already this year – read about it here and here – and couldn’t be more excited to see them a third time at All Good. Follow the jump for some more bands we’re looking forward to seeing.

2010 No Depression Festival Lineup Announced

The bible of all things alt-country and Americana has gone through some transitions in the last few years. Like many in the media business, declining ad revenues forced the 13 year old magazine out of print in June, 2008, leaving the No Depression down but not out.

Relaunched as an online community for music fans (especially those of the Americana flavor) No Depression is pushing on and are celebrating with a summer festival in Redmond, Washington.

Acts including, The Swell Season, Lucinda Williams, Cave Singers and Alejandro Escovedo converge on Aug. 21, 2010, at Marymoor Park. Pre-sale tickets are available 10 a.m. Thursday 4/29 until 10 p.m. Friday 4/30. General ticket sales kick off on May 1.

Sasquatch! Music Festival Lineup Announced

Sasquatch Festival 2010 Being relatively new to Portland I am still getting up to speed on the various summer festivals out this way. One that gets the most talk is the Sasquatch Festival, which true to Pacific Northwestern ways includes camping in the Columbia Gorge. Getting in and out of this festival can be a challenge, I’m told, but who cares when you can return to your Westy for a nap and a couple veggie burritos?

This year’s line up looks pretty tasty, by the way, including the recently reunited Pavement, Massive Attack, My Morning Jacket, Ween, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Kid Cudi, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Band of Horses and others.

Marking it’s ninth year, this year’s Sasquatch Festival returns to The Gorge in Quincy, WA May 29-31 (Memorial Day Weekend).

Tickets go on sale Saturday, February 20 at 10:00am through TicketMaster (booo!!!).

Camping is available for May 28, 29, 30 and 31 and can also be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com

Perry Farrell Confirms Decade More of Lollapalooza

Lollapalooza has become my favorite time of year. The music’s way better than Christmas and the food beats the hell out of Thanksgiving (gotta love that falafel pita!). So it warms my heart to hear that Lolla founder Perry Farrell has inked a contract with the city of Chicago for ten more years of rock and roll and bikini girls.

Now, how do I get that ten-year pass?

This was my first trip back to Chicago since moving to Portland, Oregon in December 2008. As much as I love Portland, there is a large piece of my heart in that city by the lake. It’s where I was born, it’s where I formed my favorite band, and it’s where my son was born. It’s still my city.

So it was with great excitement and anticipation that I returned to see friends, drink a lot of beer and catch some live rock and fucking roll. I’d been planning and thinking of this trip since before we even moved so you’d think I’d have had all the details ironed out like the Arctic Monkeys‘ fitted shirts. You don’t know me well and the Monkeys no longer wear Fred Perry, but more on that later…
