John Lennon Remasters Coming in October

John Lennon by Iain Macmillan

Eight of John Lennon‘s classic solo albums and other standout recordings have been digitally remastered from his original mixes for a global catalogue initiative commemorating the music legend’s 70th birthday, October 9, 2010. Plus, Double Fantasy will have a new “Stripped Down” remix in addition to the original mix. Plus, of course, a huge eleven-disc box set and couple of different greatest hits compilations.

No Two Virgins, Life with the Lions, or Wedding Album though. Because those albums are, you know, weird.

Full press release after the jump…

Handwritten Lyrics for A Day in the Life Auctioned

On a Loop in Hell Some handwritten lyrics of the Beatles‘ “A Day in the Life” will hit the auction block in June, the BBC reports. Written by John Lennon in a couple types of ink (because one pen apparently ran out) and with corrections and notes throughout, the double-side sheet is expected to fetch around $700,000, just behind the current record holder for handwritten Beatles lyrics.

“According to [Sotheby’s], the current record for the sale of Beatles lyrics is All You Need Is Love, which fetched $1m (£655,450) in 2005.”

The lyrics go up for sale on June 18, in case anyone is looking for a birthday present for Paul McCartney.

John Lennon Signed My Album Day He Was Killed: What’s It Worth?

Lennon%20and%20Chapman_Cropped.jpg As most people know, John Lennon was gunned down in New York City on December 8, 1980 by Mark David Chapman, a loner from Hawaii with a Holden Caulfield complex and an intense drive to make a mark. What many don’t know is that earlier that day Lennon had signed a handful of autographs for fans, including the album cover of his latest release Double Fantasy.

Letter of Note is a cool little blog dedicated to highlighting “correspondence deserving of a wider audience,” where they publish personal letters of note. Today they have a letter from one of the autographer seekers from that day to a collector wondering about the value of an item signed by John Lennon on the day of his murder. To say anything more would give away the surprise but check it out.

A clue on who the letter writer is after the jump…

John Lennon’s Death 29 Years Later

Lennon

Time has a funny way of making us all so much smaller. I was born a fan of The Beatles. My dad saw them in Washington, D.C. in 1964 and their music is as much a part of my life as just about I can think of. I am old enough to remember (vaguely) rumors and fantasies of their reunion. John and Paul sightings were breathlessly reported in tabloids and rock magazines (the leather-clad equivalent of tabloids). That of course was dashed when Mark David Chapman killed John Lennon in cold blood in front of the Dakota building in New York City. The world stopped. Howard Cossell reported it just minutes later on Monday Night Football.

CNN Contributor Bob Greene puts all that, and the time since past, into stark perspective with an essay marking 29 years since Lennon’s death.

To anyone in this city, in this country, in this world, who is younger than 32 or 33 years old, the memory of Lennon is of a man who has always been dead. The murder was past tense by the time people who are now that age first became aware of his name.

The Dakota, in its own way, may be, to them, like Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., or the triple underpass in Dallas. A place where something terrible happened, yes, but something terrible that happened in history, not in the recollected narrative of their daily lives.

Long ago John Lennon had been elevated to martyred saint and now he enters the long, dark hallway of history. Godspeed, John.

Another 1974 Photo of Lennon and McCartney

Seeing this 2006 post about the “last known” photograph of John Lennon and Paul McCartney reminded me that I recently stumbled across a better photo from the same day.

And this one’s even in color. Can’t remember where I found it, but here it is. Gotta love Paul’s clam diggers.

It’s been like three whole days since we’ve posted anything Beatle-related, and we figured you must be jonesin’.

New Lennon Bio Pic: Nowhere Boy

It’s a terrible name so can the film be any good? Who knows? A new biographical film on John Lennon titled Nowhere Boy premiered in the UK this week. The film focuses on Lennon’s youth up through the launch of The Beatles. One unique factor is the use of Lennon’s actual voice to drive some of the narrative. He’s a fascinating character and the story of The Beatles doesn’t get old for many of us, but how many really good non-documentary movies have been made about John Lennon’s life and music?

Inspiration for “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” Dies

Lucy Vodden, inspiration for Lucy in the Sky with DiamondsLucy Vodden, Julian Lennon‘s classmate and the subject of a drawing Lennon showed his father that inspired the Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” died of Lupus on Tuesday, reports BBC News. She was 46.

Most assumed the song was an ode to LSD and it was banned from broadcast by the BBC in 1967.

Speculation swirled for years about the actual identity of the girl pictured. Julian later confirmed it was Vodden: “I don’t know why I called it that or why it stood out from all my other drawings, but I obviously had an affection for Lucy at that age.

Julian Lennon's Drawing of Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds

“I used to show dad everything I’d built or painted at school, and this one sparked off the idea for a song about Lucy in the sky with diamonds.”

According to The NME, Julian Lennon had been in recent contact with his former classmate:

After learning that Vodden was suffering from Lupus, Julian Lennon contacted her to wish her well. He later sent her garden centre vouchers after learning that she found solace from spending time in her garden.

Her death was announced by The St Thomas Lupus Trust, who had been caring for her.

John LennonStream: John Lennon – “Watching the Wheels” acoustic demo (ASX, QTL)

This version of Lennon’s classic Double Fantasy single was originally released on the 2004 Acoustic collection, which caught a lot of flack for containing 9 previously released tracks (out of 16), It’s now being released on the soundtrack to an upcoming Judd Apatow/Adam Sandler/Seth Rogen movie. Just John and a guitar, still working out the song’s lyrics. Fascinating to imagine the different arrangements this song might’ve taken…

John Lennon: New York exhibit shows bag of bloody clothes

John Lennon's bloody clothes

BBC News reports that a new John Lennon exhibition in New York will feature a paper bag containing the bloody clothes from the night he was murdered.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex display also features the piano from his apartment and handwritten lyrics.

His widow Yoko Ono, who has created the display, said the clothes were “hard to include” and she feared she “might be criticised as well” for including them.

Ono apparently “received the items from the medical examiner after Lennon’s death.” I know a lot of people will give her shit about this, but she’s never tried to hide the graphic horror of her husband’s death. John Lennon was shot and killed, and if we try to shy away from that fact, how can we ever expect to honestly deal with issues of violence in our society? I applaud Yoko for her idealistic efforts toward working against gun violence. I don’t see much evidence that we’ve gotten any closer to that goal since 1980, but hey, more power to her.
