N.W.A. and the Posse: Where Are They Now?

N.W.A. and the PosseThis is one of the coolest things I’ve read in a long, long time. Martin Cizmar at the Phoenix New Times has written The Posse Project, wherein he has researched the “the 12 Guys from N.W.A’s First Album Cover” and reports who they were, how they ended up on the cover, and where they are now.

Not only does the cover of N.W.A’s first album not look anything like the standard image of “The World’s Most Dangerous Group,” it’s such an odd mix of styles it’s hard to believe the guys posing together are any sort of group at all. Truly, the cover of N.W.A. and the Posse is a puzzle.

This picture is also, however, a perfect snapshot of one of the most important scenes in the history of popular music. Stare for a moment and you can see a myth about to be born. That myth, Gangsta Rap, enabled four guys in this picture — Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and Eazy E — to titillate and terrify America as Compton-based rap group Niggaz With Attitude.

We all should be able to recognize Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and MC Ren, but what about the other eight guys? Well, thanks to this fascinating research, you can read all about them. (And by the way, Cizmar’s profiles of the four you know are well worth reading, so click through!)

NWA – "Help" tha Police

Video: Adam Buxton – “Help the Police”

I literally have tears in my eyes from laughing out loud. I can’t believe it’s been online since 2007 and nobody I know has sent it to me before. It’s so perfect, I can hardly believe it.

I used to think I was a clever N.W.A. fan for saying, “Fuck the police coming straight from the underground / A young brother’s got it bad ’cause I’m JAKE BROWN.” But I’ve got absolutely nothing on this guy. Holy cow. I know I’m prone to hyperbole, but seriously everybody needs to watch this. It’s absolutely perfectly done. This dude needs to do a family friendly, British version of the entire Straight Outta Compton album.

It’s apparently from the BBC series Rush Hour. Wikipedia tells me that “BBC Three didn’t recommission the show for second series due to bad reviews,” which, based on this one sketch, I find very hard to believe.

Over at Detour, our man Johnny Loftus takes a look back at NWA’s classic “Straight Outta Compton” video:

“Ren’s a ruthless villain and we know this, but so is Officer Cliche driving around LA there, right? If he’s looking for something to arrest, he should start with Cube’s haircut.”

To answer Johnny’s “Where were you when you first heard it?” query: Freshman year of college, some sporty dude in my dorm made me a tape with Straight Outta Compton on one side and Eazy Duz It on the other. My life was never the same. This would eventually lead to me scouring the used bins for everything sampled on every hip-hop album I would ever hear.

And to this day, every single time I hear anyone utter the simple phrase, “Me neither,” I can’t help but thinking — and if I’ve had enough to drink, shouting out loud — HO, GO HOME AND WASH OUT YOUR BEAVER! Yeah, that’s me.

Where were you when you first heard NWA?
