Dammers Still Out of The Specials

Special AKA - GangstersThe Specials‘ founder, keyboardist, and songwriter Jerry Dammers says he’s been excluded from the band’s upcoming 30th Anniversary reunion dates, thanks mostly to the efforts of singer Terry Hall. Dammers says that he was involved in some early rehearsals, but that’s only because word of the meetings slipped out to him.

“The fact is that I would not have been invited to the first ‘reunion’ meeting at all had [drummer] John Bradbury not told me about it,” he said in a Guardian piece. “It was generally agreed to get together and commence rehearsals, by everyone except him [Hall].

“Shortly after the meeting, however, [guitarist] Lynval Golding phoned me saying that I was not required for the band – ‘like Bill Wyman from the [Rolling] Stones’ were his exact words. Terry’s manager circulated emails from which I was excluded. Rehearsals were held without me, and I only managed to attend two – one of which was attended by only four people.”

Ouch. Dude is the founder of one of the most influential 2 Tone ska revival bands and can’t even get those guys to return his calls?

Looks like a lot of the issue is around what kind of reunion dates they play with Hall favoring an extended tour in smaller venues and Dammers preferring a couple large-scale shows, mostly in London and Coventry.

The Specials will play UK live dates next month and will play at the T In The Park, Oxegen and V Festival.

Daptone Records Robbed

Daptone Records was robbed, and the thieves made off with a bunch of the soul label’s vintage gear, as well as some computers, phone equipment, and an empty safe. Dap-King Gabriel Roth “would like to ask for everyone’s help first in keeping an eye out for all of our stuff showing up on ebay/craigslist/local music shops, and secondly (and more realistically) keeping an eye out for good deals on headphones, mics, pre-amps, etc.”

As an aside, Roth notes that they “have a session scheduled for Friday to lay down some music for (I know this sounds surreal) Rod Stewart, and I’m going to have to get the studio running by then.” Solo Rod, or could this be the first evidence that the rumored Faces reunion might actually end up sounding cool?

Thanks, Lep!

The Dead Milkmen Keep At It

Dead MilkmenThe official Dead Milkmen website reports some New Stuff Happening in the land of the pale cow:

We had so much fun last November at the Fun Fun Fun Festival that we’ve decided to keep at it and play some shows to see what might develop as far as new material. We’re rehearsing and will see how it goes – stay tuned…

So far they’ve booked a show in Brooklyn in April. Joe Jack Talcum has a bunch of solo shows coming up, too. If you want to see what these guys look like these days, check out the flickr set from Dean Clean‘s sister.

Pete to Carl: Let’s Be Friends!

Pete Doherty reveals to the NME that the Libertines have received multiple offers worth millions of pounds to reunite for British festivals but that co-leader Carl Barat has nixed them all.

“We had some ridiculous offers to headline Reading,” he said. “Like £2 million to headline this festival, £1 million to headline that festival. I said, ‘Why don’t we just do it? Let’s get the old band back together.’

Pete and Carl have been seen together on occasion and have even performed some acoustic sets in recent months so what’s the problem? Pete says it’s personal.

“He (Barat) said, ‘We have to be friends, we can’t just do it for the money’. I said, ‘OK, let’s be friends! Friends who go and make lots of money’, because I haven’t got any money and I know he’s skint.

…and then it gets weird, even for Pete Doherty.

“He said I had to go and see an energy consultant, some new age guru who is going to measure my energy levels and see if I’m surrounded by darkness.

Sounds like one of those Scientology exams. Have we lost Carl too?

Stone Roses Bassist: 2009 is Perfect Time for Reunion

Now that Johnny Marr has scuttled hopes for a Smiths reunion, the NME has promptly switched gears and is focusing on The Stone Roses.

An article on NME.com quotes Roses bassist Mani as saying 2009 is the perfect time for a reunion and that ¾ of the band are ready to go. The only holdout, according to Mani, is singer Ian Brown.

“Me, John [Squire, guitarist] and Reni [drums] are up for doing it and Ian just needs some working on,” he told internet TV site Channelbee.

Apparently familiar with the NME’s power to persuade erstwhile bands to reform, Reni makes the call and seems to encourage the magazine’s efforts.

“Next year is the 20th anniversary of the first album. It’s the ideal time to do it. It’s something I would love to do before we are all fat and bald. Start the campaign.”

We’ll see…

Smiths Reunion? Unlikely.

There’s been a lot of hot air being blown around over this tabloid article from the UK’s Daily Mirror: Morrissey and Johnny Marr heal rift raising hopes of a Smiths reunion. But come on. Look at the content, and you’ll see this is all silly speculation:

Singer Morrissey, 49, and guitarist Johnny Marr, 45, are said to have healed their bitter rift and are now regularly in touch with each other.

One source said yesterday: “The very fact they are talking again is the most hopeful thing in years. The industry has been buoyant with talk of them getting back together.

“A lot of people think of them as the best thing since the Beatles. They’d fill stadiums many times over.”

We’d love to see it. But it’s not going to happen. Johnny Marr just joined the Cribs, for one thing, and they’re going on tour next year. Plus, Morrissey very publicly loathes Smiths drummer Mike Joyce, who sued Morrissey and Marr in 1996 over profits from the Smiths, and was awarded over £1 million in back pay. And without Joyce and bassist Andy Rourke, it’s not the Smiths. It would be cool to see Morrissey and Marr together, but it wouldn’t be the Smiths.

Not to mention the fact that Morrissey has said, “I would rather eat my own testicles than reform The Smiths, and that’s saying something for a vegetarian.”

Ever notice how these kinds of headline-grabbing rumors start up every time somebody’s got a new album to promote?

Blur to Reunite

I’ll be damned if The NME hasn’t done it again: Blur is reuniting.

According to Billboard, the band will reform for “an open air show in London’s Hyde Park next summer.” The show is booked for July 3 and will be promoted by Live Nation, so I would bet they’re getting phat cash for this gig.

According to the article, guitarist Graham Coxon is on board for the show. Coxon quit the band in 2002. There are rumors that the band could also headline next years Glastonbury festival, but there’s been no official word.

This marks the latest in a string of bands British music tabloid The New Musical Express has pushed for reunion only to see their prodding actually work. Recent successes include the Jesus and Mary Chain, the Verve, My Bloody Valentine and the Faces most notably.

I will once again submit a formal request for the NME to focus all efforts on reuniting The Libertines. Once that is complete, we can discuss the Stone Roses and the Smiths (for shows only, no new recordings).

UPDATE:

Damon Albarn talks to The NME:

“It just felt it was right again,” declared Albarn of Blur’s return. “It somehow feels like there’s something for us to do again, we’re not completely useless or pointless, we’ve got a reason to exist.”

Faces to Reform

The NME is reporting that the Faces will reunite with all original members except Ronnie Lane, who died of pneumonia in 1997.

The band is set to meet for rehearsals next Monday, November 17, to run through their old hits but there’s no mention in the article of touring or recording so it could just be some buddies getting together and jamming. Not that the NME hypes non-stories or anything…

Let’s suppose for a moment they are getting ready to record again. Who would you like to see behind the board? I am putting my money on Jack White.

Tommy Stinson, Paul Westerberg Messing Around

Tommy Stinson tells the Minneapolis StarTribune he had been in town in September to “mess around” with Paul Westerberg and drummer Michael Bland.

He sounded enthusiastic about the sessions and said, “It was a lot of fun.” When I asked if they did any recording, though, he answered, “Nah, that’s getting to first base. We’re sort of still in the dugout chewing gum.” As for the general state of the two former ‘Mats mates relationship, he said, “We’re good friends, and I’m sure we’re going to work together again.”

No word on whether or not Tommy’s made it to first with Paul since then. Let’s hope they go all the way!

The second batch of deluxe Replacements reissues were released on September 23.

Classic Dead Milkmen video: Punk Rock Girl

Video: Dead Milkmen – “Punk Rock Girl”

Saw this on VH1 Classic this weekend, and even though the Dead Milkmen were one of my favorite bands in high school, I don’t think I’d ever seen this video before. It’s better than I could’ve imagined.

So as I was looking up some links, I came across the news that they’re reuniting to play the Fun Fun Fun Festival in Austin, TX. They originally split up in 1995, but got together for a couple of benefit shows after bassist Dave Blood committed suicide in 2004. Dandrew Stevens will play bass.

Make your own Punk Rock Girl paper doll!
