New Claud video: Tommy

Video: Claud – “Tommy”

Single out now on Saddest Factory.

I like Claud. I like sad songs. “Tommy” is a heartbreaker about barely-requited love.

I’m a party in the Village you make fun of with your friends
But you show up time and time and time again.

Super Monster was the first full length album released by Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory imprint. That was back in February and this is Claud’s first new song since then. No new album announcement yet, but there’s a headlining tour coming to a city (or Ferndale) near you in 2022.

New Muna video: Silk Chiffon (ft. Phoebe Bridgers)

Video: MUNA – “Silk Chiffon” (ft. Phoebe Bridgers)

Directed by Ally Pankiw. Single out now on Saddest Factory.

Is this any good? Or is it boring major label pop music that seems kinda cool because it’s super gay and features Phoebe Bridgers? I can’t tell anymore. A lot of people apparently have a lot to say about Haim, but does that make them interesting?

Muna released two albums on RCA and toured with Harry Styles before being picked up by Bridgers’ Saddest Factory imprint. Is this what passes for independent music these days?

The song is catchy enough.

Like life’s so fun, life’s so fun
Got my miniskirt and my rollerblades on
Bag on my side cause I’m out til dawn
Keeping it light like silk chiffon.

It’s refreshing in a pandemic, I guess, to keep things light and emphasize fun. The video is cute: Our hero gets sent to conversion therapy camp where she faces indoctrination until all the inmates escape to a rock and roll roadhouse gay bar. Yee haw!

Too bad they’re not selling those “straight is great” shirts in their merch store. Come on! Leaving money on the table.

I wonder if Bridgers’ verse that mentions “feeling anxious inside of the CVS” is a reference to her 2020 photo shoot for Rolling Stone in a CVS.

Like all well-crafted pop songs, the more you listen to “Silk Chiffon” the more it grows on you. Turns out it is pretty good after all.

New Claud video: Soft Spot

Video: Claud – “Soft Spot”

Directed by Brad Bischoff. From Super Monster, out February 12 on Saddest Factory.

Claud is the first artist signed to Saddest Factory, Phoebe Bridgers’ new imprint from the Secretly label group. “If I like it and I listen to it for pleasure, then other people will like it and listen to it for pleasure,” Bridgers told Billboard. “I don’t think I have any ethos other than, ‘Am I jealous?'”

Seems like a sound business model, especially if “Soft Spot” is any indication of things to come.

This sounds kinda strange I thought
I saw you at a party but
I finally got close it wasn’t you

That’s a good opening verse! What comes next? Listen and find out. (Spoiler: it’s over now, but someone just can’t take the rejection.)

“Soft Spot” is the second single from the upcoming Super Monster album. “Gold” was released back in October, and it’s good too.

Claud got some attention last year with the self-released Sideline Star ep, including a feature in Billboard. So it’ll be interesting to see what happens with the new album.
