Stones Documentary: Charlie Is My Darling

While everyone is sweating over the Exile on Main St. reissues and the accompanying documentary, Stones in Exile, many are still upset that Cocksucker Blues has yet to see the light of day. Sure, the film’s a milestone in it’s documenting the Rolling Stones at their debauched best and should indeed be restored and released, but a more rare gem still sits in the vaults.

Shot by Peter Whitehead in 1965 during the Stones’ tour of Ireland, Charlie Is My Darling is a short documentary of the band before they were an industry. They were barely a band and their lack of footing is clear in the interviews. Most telling are those with a reticent Charlie Watts and a dopey Brian Jones. To think that these goofy kids would become The World’s Greatest Rock Band is something only Jones’ ego takes seriously.

Lots of shakey, amazing footage of early live shows and some backstage action with Mick and Keith putting on their best Elvis Presley, Charlie Is My Darling is a darling of a film. Honk honk.

Wilco – Deeper Down on Ferguson

Video: Wilco – “Deeper Down”

Wilco played The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson last night, so here’s the video if you missed it. Seems like an odd choice of a song for national television, but then again, they’ve played most of their poppy ones on TV already: “Wilco (the song)” on Colbert back in 2008, “You Never Know” on Conan back in June, “You and I” on Letterman in July.

I’d like to have seen them do “I’ll Fight,” but this is still pretty cool.

Ramones Rock ‘N’ Roll High School Reissued

Video: The Ramones – “Do You Wanna Dance?”

Looks like the gang at Shout Factory is releasing a new “Roger Corman’s Cult Classics” edition of the 1979 Ramones cinematic masterpiece, Rock ‘N’ Roll High School, on DVD and Blu-ray. If you haven’t seen it, you can only imagine how awesome it is. If you need a little help with your imagination, we’ve got another clip below…the scene wherein P. J. Soles sings the title track to her all-girl gym class. Aw yeah. Actually, for a Roger Corman production, it’s rather tame!

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Conscience Killer

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Beat the Devil's TattooMP3: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – “Conscience Killer” from Beat the Devil’s Tattoo, out now on Vagrant.

This track is somewhat a return to the “Whatever Happened to My Rock and Roll (Punk Song)” vibe that originally attracted us to BRMC in 2001. They’ve gone through a few permutations since then, including a bluesy acoustic phase, which is represented by the title track, the video for which you can watch below…

M.I.A. Video Born Free Removed from YouTube

MIA_Born%20Free.jpg

It’s a heavy video, for sure, ending with red heads being rounded up and executed and there’s a bit of naughty action here and there so YouTube has apparently pulled M.I.A.’s new video “Born Free” after just one day. The BBC’s Newsbeat quotes a YouTube spokesperson, “On YouTube the rules prohibit content like pornography or gratuitous violence,” the spokesperson said.

You can see the video in question on M.I.A.’s site (or below).

New Flaming Lips video: Powerless

Video: The Flaming Lips – "Powerless"

A scantily clad young girl is tied up and guarded by a monkey who watches as she struggles to free herself. Then a mystical force shakes the shit out of her and freaks out the monkey. The ropes that were binding her come loose and she dances off into the sunset, leaving the monkey somewhat bewildered.

YouTube commenter Questpeace doesn’t really like the video: “I wish she like broke out of the chair and turned into like fucking Mothra and blew stuff up with psychedelic powers or something. I don’t know. I just think it could have been better.”

New Rolling Stones video: Plundered My Soul

Video: “Plundered My Soul” by The Rolling Stones

The video contains a lot of great old footage of the Stones from the early 70s. Since they’re tacking this on to their upcoming Exile on Main Street reissue, it’s not surprising that they didn’t include any studio footage of 66-year-old Mick Jagger recording the brand new vocal for this song in 2009. The band hasn’t exactly been cagey about admitting this fact, but the idea that they’re attempting to pass this off as an Exile bonus track is laughable at best, and fraudulent at worst. It sounds like what it is: a 2009 Stones song. Mick just can’t leave it alone. Gotta tinker with it, don’t you? Oh well.
