Streets - white British rapper

Entertainment Weekly actually gave this album (Original Pirate Material) an A. I've heard mad hype about it, but I've yet to actually hear the album. Is there anyone here who's listened to it, and can fill me in?

Katy, don't you read the Glorious Noise Reviews page? Johnny reviewed that album.

It was kind of a short review, I'd like to hear other opinions as well.

No opinion -- but did any one go to the show at Double Door last week?

Don't Mug Yourself

I've heard the first single on MTV2. I think it's called "Don't Mug Yourself" but I'm not sure. It's class regardless.

Expanding on my Streets review a bit:

I thoroughly recommend Original Pirate Material if for the first track alone. "Turn The Page" begins with a simple organ loop, drops in a hop-scotch 2-step Garage beat, and builds the melody with another violin loop. In comes Skinner over the top with a dynamic rap that sets up the characters, vibe, and story-cycle of the next 13 tracks on the record. The lyrics below present Skinner's main character - the Geezer, the EveryKid - as someone who feels chosen to face his culture's fears, folly, and feral forays and engage them while destroying them. He knows who he is, what he does, and who he hangs with. But he wonders about the future, and wonders about his place. Is he a king? Is he a just another geezer, just another kid on the Tube? It's a really great record that also sounds great in headphones, which the EW critic obviously didn't try out. Walking around in your town with this record in your ears makes it even better.

"Turn The Page"

That's it, turn the page on the day, walk away
Cause there's sense in what I say
I'm forty-fifth generation Roman
But I don't know 'em or care when I'm spitting
So return to your sitting position and listen
It's fitting, I'm miles ahead and they chase me
Show your face on TV then we'll see, you can't do half
My crew laughs at your rhubarb-and-custard verses
You rain down curses but I'm waving your hearses driving by
Streets riding high with the beats in the sky
All stare, eyes glazed, Garage burnt down
The fire raged for forty days and in forty ways
But through the blaze they see it fade
The sea of black, the beaming heat on their faces
Then a figure emerges from the wastage
Eyes transfixed with a piercing gaze
One hand clutching his sword raised to the sky
They wonder how, they wonder why
The sky turns white, it all becomes clear
They felt lifted from their fears
They shed tears, in the light after six dark years
Young bold soldiers, the fire burns, crackles and smoulders
Five years older and wiser
The fires are burning, on fire, never tire
Slay warriors in the forests, and on higher we sing
Hear the strings rising, the war's over, the bells ring

Maybe I need to check this out, because I always thought of "white British rapper" with the same disdain as "vegan Philly cheesesteak."

It's a little bit patchy, with only the singles Don't mug yourself and Let's push things forward standing out. You'll see it in bargain bins this time next year. I guaran-fucking-tee it.
