I'll go Smithereens because what I've heard of the latest Hold Steady is bit disappointing.

i really like craig finn's voice, but i can totally understand how people wouldn't.

...and similarly, I think Pat DiNizio has a voice that's perfect for the Smithereens. I just busted out 11 this week; it's in DJMurph's Active Rotation, now playing in a Corolla near him.
