How many "new bands" do you listen to?

Postby Jake » Tue Feb 09, 2010 5:07 pm

I feel like I listen to quite a bit of new music. But looking at the top 100 of my last.fm artist stats for the last 12 months, it sure doesn't look like it.

I'm going to define "new band" as any artist/group whose first release came out during or after 2000. So the following newish bands don't count:

White Stripes - 1999
Clem Snide - 1998

New bands I listen to:

Arctic Monkeys
Jay Reatard - solo, but he'd been recording in bands since the 90s
The Libertines
Animal Collective
Blitzen Trapper
Vampire Weekend
Ben Kweller
Avett Brothers
Conor Oberst
Art Brut
Iron & Wine
Heavy Trash

That's 12 of the top 100. Not totally shameful, I guess. How about you?

The newer stuff I've been listening to:

Glasvegas
Xx
TV On The Radio
Jay Reatard
The Horrors
Gallows

Do the Black Keys count as new? Cause I've been listening the shit out of those guys.

Going by your top 100 isn't exactly fair, just because older bans will win in your top playlist just due to volume. I have pretty much every album REM (I firmly believe they stopped recording after Up, so I've got 'em all), Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo, so stuff like that skews the rankings quite a bit. Newer bands that I enjoy might have only put out one album - how can that compete with 10+ from the older guys? Anyway, based on the stated criteria:

Liars
Espers
The Helio Sequence
Seekonk
Coastal
Transfer
Blood on the Wall
Band of Horses
The Kills
The Beachwood Sparks
Broken Social Scene
The Arcade Fire
The Veils
The Morning After Girls
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks

Jake: I'd say "Heavy Trash" doesn't count.

A good proportion of the musicians and bands in my last year last.fm count are not only not new, but dead.

Here's post-1999 in my last.fm top-100 list of the last 12 months. The list is not that accurate, because I listen on the CD player quite a bit, too, but I don't know whether that skews the list in favor of or to the detriment of newbies. (CD player is more for albums, duh, while computer is more for shuffle.) The * is for people that really are pre-2000 but hardly anyone had heard of them.

13. Feist*
17. Peter Doherty
19. Babyshambles
23. Drive-By Truckers*
26. Girl Talk
45. Libertines
62 Camille (French singer I don't even listen to anymore)
75 Evan Christopher (NOLA clarinet player I met when he and Tom McDermott came to Paris after the flood. The two have also made some very good records together.)
88. The Long Blondes
94. Laura Cantrell (tie)
94. Tom McDermott (NOLA pianist)

(My own recordings are at 216 and 273.)

Off the top of my head:
Broken West
Libertines
Dios
Tilly and the Wall
Band of Horses
British Sea Power
The Thermals
Midlake

I'm sure there are others, but you know how old people are always forgetting stuff ...

New Pornographers
Avett Bros.
Iron & Wine
Kathleen Edwards
The Notwist

Short list I guess. I'm ignoring single-disc acquisitions I still listen to like...

Dirty Projectors
LCD Soundsystem
The National
The Xx

...as I apparently didn't like them enough to go buy another album.
