I’m a sucker for a catchy pop song with crunchy guitars and a sassy attitude.

“’Bang Bang Bang’ is my favorite song of mine of date, and after writing songs about wanting a sugar daddy and being a hoochie, I feel like this has to be a great achievement,” Hibberd told Billboard. “It’s my ‘Crash’ by the Primitives, my ode to the ’90s teenager and the soundtrack to every mistake I’ve ever made and how I can laugh at that now. Shout out to Brian Jonestown Massacre for heavily influencing the second verse.”

Gotta love that the kids are rocking out to the Primitive and BJM. I remember getting into the Primitives because Morrissey wore a “Stop Killing Me” t-shirt in a photo in the NME or somewhere. That’s how we found out about new bands back in the days before the internet!

Video: Lauran Hibberd – “Sweat Patch”

Lauran Hibberd already released one of the catchiest singles of the year with “Hootchie” and now she’s closing out the year with a new one. The “Sweat Patch” video sees the Isle of Wight singer pumping iron and getting swoll.

When I was a youngster my mom’s sister briefly dated a guy from the Isle of Wight. He visited the States once and got introduced to our whole extended family. He was super charming and spoke with the most elegant accent I had ever heard. You’ve heard the myth that British people drink warm beer? I think this guy might have started that. He would take a six pack out of the fridge and set it on the counter.

Several years later, I spent a semester in Scotland and was shocked that the pubs served cold beer. My mom visited and we actually met up with this guy down in London. And he totally hit on my mom, his ex-girlfriend’s sister! My mom rebuffed him, of course.

By then, I had spent enough time with the natives that I could differentiate between all the regional accents and the class statuses they implied, and I realized that this guy wasn’t quite as sophisticated as he seemed to a bunch of American rubes. Or as chivalrous. He was basically a dirty old sailor. But hey, he gave us a great tour of some cool spots and barely got a kiss on the cheek out of the deal. So I’ll raise a glass to him. But whatever’s in it, it’ll be cold.

Oh wow, what a great song. I was first tipped off to it by Jeremy at Fingertips who included it in his newsletter with a description that seemed to be written expressly to appeal to my personal sensibilities:

With satisfying, old-school crunch, “Hoochie” is the kind of song that reacquaints the ear with how simple and vital a rock song can yet be, here in our beleaguered 21st century: guitars still excite, catchy and uncomplicated melodies still delight, and can still be put in service of sardonic young folks, especially those possessed of the right combination of charisma and purpose, as young Isle of Wight singer/songwriter Lauran Hibberd surely is.

And now Hibberd has released a video that perfectly matches the tone of the song. The video is silly but charming with an undertone of sadness that belies the punchy fun of the delivery.
