Congratulations are in order, according to an update on the White Stripes site.

Meg White married fiance Jackson Smith, on Friday, May 22nd in a ceremony in Nashville, TN, as part of a double wedding with Jack Lawrence and girlfriend Jo McCaughey. The nuptials took place in Jack White’s backyard and were attended by a small party of close friends and relatives. The wedding was officiated by the most reverend Benjamin Swank.

Meg White Marrying Sonic Smith's Kid

Meg White

Sorry, boys, she’s no longer available. According to the Detroit Free Press, Meg White is getting married. Who’s the lucky guy? Turns out it’s none other than Detroit rock royalty: Jackson Smith, son of Patti Smith and the MC5‘s Fred “Sonic” Smith.

Smith, who grew up in St. Clair Shores, was 12 when his father died in 1994. He moved with his mother two years later to New York City, returning to Michigan after high school and impressing local music fans with his intuitive guitar talent.

White and Smith, who became close last summer, are known around town as private but personable figures. They live together in White’s Detroit home, and got engaged several weeks ago.

Congratulations to the happy couple! The date is set for May 22 in Nashville. We’ll be watching the mailbox for our invitation.

The White Stripes to Perform on Late Night

The NME is reporting that The White Stripes are slotted to perform on the last night of NBC’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien. This marks the first live appearance of the duo since canceling tour dates in September 2007.

O’Brien is handing the reins of his show over to Jimmy Fallon and then taking over the desk vacated by Jay Leno on the Tonight Show. The White Stripes did a week-long residency on Late Night in 2003.

Chicks Rock: No Shit, Sherlock

A friend of mine, knowing my interest in both music and academia, forwarded an announcement of a Midwestern conference titled “Chicks Rock: Women in the Face of Rock and Roll.” My first thought was: oh boy, how obsolete can you get? Is there anything left to say about women’s strong and exciting contributions to rock? I’d say they’ve made their place, they’re in the rock world and there’s nothing remarkable about that anymore. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist (or an academic) to see that Patti Smith is as powerful and compelling a rock figure as any male you could name. Or that Madonna and Bjork cut their swathes in the pop world with as much talent and charisma as Elvis P. or Michael Jackson. Now, the Donnas are a fun (if retro) punk/pop band and Sleater-Kinney is one of the best contemporary rock bands in the world. Is there a difference in what these rock musicians/bands do and what male rock bands/musicians do?

Hey Yoshimi, Battle This…

More white lies from the Detroit duo uncovered.

The White Stripes seem to invite conspiracy theories. From misleading statements regarding their relationship to ill-advised promotional agreements with Japanese automobile manufacturers, Jack and Meg White tend to cause a stir. Where there’s smoke there’s fire and if the White Stripes are involved you can bet Glorious Noise will get to the bottom of it.
