Ex-Wilco Jay Bennett Dead at 45

Ex-Wilco Jay BennettLike everything these days, word of Jay Bennett‘s death trickled out in digital drops. First was a Facebook message I saw quoting a Via Chicago bulletin board post that “someone in New York named Jay Bennett had died.” Assuming it was a simple name coincidence I didn’t immediately think much of it. I did a Google news search just to be sure, but the only articles that came up were about Bennett’s recent lawsuit against Wilco and a short article on his new label’s experiment with raising funds to release his next album. No obits. No news otherwise.

Then the stream of text messages and emails came.

Undertow Records was the first official source I saw confirm Bennett’s death. I didn’t even see it at first, I read about it in emails. Undertow Released Bennett’s first post-Wilco effort, a collaboration with longtime friend and sometime collaborator, Edward Burch, titled The Palace at 4:00am.

Burch confirmed Bennett’s death for the Chicago Sun-TimesJim DeRogatis Sunday evening.

“Early this morning, Jay died in his sleep and an autopsy is being performed,” Burch is quoted as saying on DeRogatis’ blog. “The family is in mourning and is unavailable for comment at this time.”

Jay Bennett Sues Jeff Tweedy for Wilco Royalties

Well, this certainly isn’t going to help our case to get Wilco to re-hire Jay Bennett: Wilco Ex-Member Sues Jeff Tweedy For Royalties.

In the Washington Post‘s coverage of the lawsuit, they link to our 2002 interview with Bennett wherein he listed all of his contributions to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Update: Jim DeRogatis points out why Bennett needs the money: dude’s having hip replacement surgery. Ouch.

Update II: Tweedy responds in a statement to Paste:

“I know exactly as much as everyone else does. I’ve read the news and I honestly have no idea what these claims are based on. It was such a long time ago. Aside from everything else, I’m being sued for not paying someone for appearing in a movie I didn’t produce. Go figure. I am truly sad it has come to this. I am equally convinced, however, that I have done nothing wrong and that this will be handled fairly and swiftly.”

Update III: Chicagoist has the full text of the public filing.

21 Reasons Why Jay Bennett Should Be Back In Wilco

Jay BennettGLONO has a long history with Wilco. We used to be so obsessed with this band that we actually got teased by other bloggers and commenters. We used to be featured in the band’s links section of their website (until, mysteriously, we were removed just DAYS after running GLONO’s exclusive interview with Jay Bennett after he was sacked).

We miss those days, we miss THAT band. The missing ingredient is Jay Bennett, of course. No slight on current Wilco lead guitarist Nels Cline, but we miss Jay. So we’ve compiled 21 reasons why he should be brought back to the band. We do this out of love so don’t be mad, Jeff.

21. Dreadlocks – Dude had some freaky dreads back in the day. Helps balance Tweedy’s inherent honky-ness

20. Bendy notes – Jay Bennett’s solos always feature lots of bends, which just sound cool.

19. Wilco is too serious now – Jay Bennett is a top-notch goof making him the premier candidate to bridge art and fun.

18. Mellotron – Dude’s got some crazy-rare gear.

17. It’s good for the economy – With Jay comes JP. Those guys need good jobs. Do it for Obama!

Jay Bennett Back in the Studio

I don’t care what anyone says, I miss Jay Bennett in Wilco. The albums produced by that band during his tenure remain some of my favorites by any artist and the albums released since his departure just don’t ring the same for me. I get that he and Jeff Tweedy had to part ways, but I wish it weren’t so.

So, we know that Wilco headlined the second night of Lollapalooza capping off a couple years now of ever higher profile shows and opportunities, but what’s Jay been up to? For one, he relocated his Pie Holden Suite Sound from Chicago to “the beautiful twin cities of Champaign/Urbana, IL.” In an email to fans, Bennett catches up on the last 18 months and his plans for the future, including the release of THREE albums and another collaboration with an old friend…no, not THAT old friend.

That’s right, I’ll be releasing three new records in the upcoming months – I’ve just finished writing and recording a new solo record, to be called “Kicking at the Perfumed Air.” Also, during the move I came across some half-finished material by my previous band, Titanic Love Affair. Not only did this lead to reconnecting with “the original cast” of TLA, but these songs left us wondering why they never made it on earlier albums. We’re going to change that, as we’ve now finished a whole album’s worth of “new” TLA songs. And finally, I’ll be reuniting on record with my longtime musical collaborator, Edward Burch, on a 6 song EP “Tribute to a Tribute” to Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds.

You can check out some of the works in progress and also some of that fabulous gear Wilco’s missing on Jay’s MySpace page.

Glorious Noise Interview with Edward Burch

BurchEdward Burch is everywhere in Chicago. If you’ve been out to a show that’s remotely related to the “alternative country” movement, you have seen him. Maybe singing backup with the Handsome Family. Maybe doing a solo acoustic thing in the front room at the Hideout on Monday nights. You’ve seen him.

His most high-profile gig has been his partnership with former Wilco multi-tasking wizard, Jay Bennett. The 2002 Bennett-Burch album, The Palace at 4am (Part I), got lots of press for a lot of reasons: some of them music-related, some of them due to the fact that Palace was released on the same day as Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Since then, Bennett and Burch released a limited pressing of an odd collection of demo versions, alternate takes, and acoustic versions of all the songs from Palace (in order!), plus two John Cale covers. In addition to his work with Jay Bennett, Burch is involved with the Kennett Brothers, the Viper & His Famous Orchestra, and a duo with Wilco’s LeRoy Bach. Despite his busy schedule, Edward took the time to participate in an email interview with Glorious Noise…

Jay Bennett: Sleepless in Chicago

Ex-Wilco guitarist and pal ready acoustic follow-up…

Hot on the heels of their debut, The Palace at 4 AM (Part 1), former Wilco guitarist, Jay Bennett, and friend to all, Edward Burch prepare to release an acoustic version of the very same album.

Undertow Records announced this week a late-October release date for The Palace at 4 AM (Acoustic). The limited-run album, comprised primarily of acoustic versions of the Palace at 4 AM, is due to drop on October 29.

“God willing,” said Undertow President, Bob Andrews.

Trying: The Wilco Movie

Pity Jay Bennett. In I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, Sam Jones’ new “documentary” about the making of Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, the former Wilco guitarist comes across as self-absorbed and out of touch with the rest of the world. Instead of displaying the typical motivation for antisocial musician behavior—sex, drugs, money—Bennett just seems to be a guy who’s not very cool. A geek. Someone mocked by his own bandmates, who has the unfortunately poor judgement to quote himself in an on-camera interview, a musician who spends more time obsessing about esoteric production issues than strumming chords. This is a somewhat expected depiction—Bennett is the guy who got kicked out of the band in the middle of the making of this film. There’s certainly no reason to expect Jones to be fair to him, not when Jones is the guy whose still photography appears in the liner notes to the album. Especially not when Jones is looking to get the band’s cooperation in the release of a double disc DVD of his movie. No, what is surprising is that the rest of Wilco doesn’t come off looking much better than Bennett, especially frontman Jeff Tweedy. “Pot Kettle Black” indeed.
