The Shins Cover Squeeze: Goodbye Girl

MP3 link (for your email): The Shins – “Goodbye Girl” (Squeeze cover)

Hey look, the Shins are back. James Mercer gets out of Broken Bells mode to cover a 1978 Squeeze song for Levi’s new Pioneer Sessions project where they get a new-ish band to “re-craft the classic songs that inspired their sound.” Cool idea. They’ve had She & Him covering a Johnny Mercer standard, Nas covering Slick Rick, etc.

Pitchfr0k points out that for this new Shins recording, Mercer was “joined on guitar by longtime Shins guitarist Dave Hernandez, on drums by Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, Black Heart Procession), and on keyboards by producer Sean Flora.”

Five from the Archive: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Grace PotterI first saw Grace Potter & The Nocturnals at Rothbury last year. Before that, I only knew them from this cover of Neil Young‘s “Cortez the Killer”, which Grace did with, among others, Steve Kimock and Joe Satriani (who I loved in this). The video was from the Jammy’s, where they apparently get people from different bands to get together and, well, jam. On different songs.

So I hadn’t seen her with the Nocturnals before Rothbury, where I was right up front. It was in the afternoon, on a hot summer day, and it was non-stop rocking the entire set. Grace is an awesome presence on stage, either behind her organ or out in front with the band. I had a great time watching them play. Until the suntan lotion started dripping into my eyes. And temporarily blinded me. So I had to stumble off into a shady place and flush my eyes out until the pain stopped. But that’s another story…

This band is a touring machine, and finely honed because of it. Follow the jump for a sampling of covers they’ve played while touring across the country this past year, hitting seemingly every nook and cranny of the continental U.S. along the way.

JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound – I am Trying to Break Your Heart

JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound

MP3: JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound – “I am Trying to Break Your Heart”

The “new face of Chicago soul” has a brand new single out now on Rabbit Factory Records. This Wilco cover is the b-side. The a-side, “Get It Together,” is a funky original that sounds like it could be a James Brown outtake. Great stuff.

Sparklehorse – Dark As A Dungeon

MOJO Tribute: Cash CoveredMP3: Sparklehorse – “Dark As A Dungeon”

I just stumbled across this on the Sparklehorse site. It’s from a tribute CD to Johnny Cash from MOJO Magazine back in April 2006. Merle Travis wrote it, but Cash popularized it by featuring it on his live At Folsom Prison album.

So consider this a belated birthday celebration to the Man in Black. I’ve got some strong opinions about the release of American VI: Ain’t No Grave, but I’m keeping them to myself for now.

The Flaming Lips – Dark Side of the Moon

The Flaming Lips - Dark Side of the MoonThe Flaming LipsDark Side Of The Moon (Warner Bros)

Have you heard about the off-Broadway performance of Romeo and Juliet that forgoes the actual work of Shakespeare in favor of a bunch of strewn together narratives, lifted from vague recollections of the play?

The Flaming Lips (along with Wayne’s nephew’s band Stardeath and the White Dwarfs) have seemingly taken a similar approach to Pink Floyd‘s Dark Side of the Moon and channeled that landmark effort into a vaguely reminiscent cover album. It’s a pairing that surely will grab the attention of fans of either band with supporters of the Lips’ unique blend of weirdness probably getting the award for higher tolerance.
