2. 21 Reasons Why Jay Bennett Should Be Back In Wilco (February 2009)

National Recording Registry 2008

The Library of Congress has announced its 25 new additions to the National Recording Registry.

Under the terms of the National Recording Preservation Act of 2000, the Librarian, with advice from the Library’s National Recording Preservation Board (NRPB), is tasked with selecting 25 recordings that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant,” and are at least 10 years old. The selections for 2008 bring the total number of recordings in the registry to 275.

Notable additions this year include:

• “Boogie Chillen,” John Lee Hooker (1948)

• “Rumble,” Link Wray (1958)

• “At Last!,” Etta James (1961)

• “The Who Sings My Generation,” The Who (1966)

Annoying that the LOC still uses Real Audio for its samples. What is this, 1999?

Wilco Songs Co-Written by Jay Bennett

Jay Bennett, All Over the PlaceIn response to Jay Bennett‘s untimely death, Jeff Tweedy released a statement acknowledging his former bandmate’s “significant contributions to the band’s songs and evolution.” He wasn’t exaggerating. According to the two major music publishing organizations, Bennett received a co-writing credit on the bulk of the material Wilco released from the Mermaid Avenue material in 1998 through Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in 2002.

Of the 15 songs on 1999’s Summerteeth, for example, Bennett co-wrote 13 of them; and 8 of the 11 songs on YHF. It would be tough to argue that the following list doesn’t represent some of Wilco’s best material.

ASCAP lists the following compositions by songwriter/composer BENNETT JAY W:

1. AIRLINE TO HEAVEN (Mermaid Avenue)

2. ASHES OF AMERICAN FLAGS (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)

3. BLOOD OF THE LAMB (Mermaid Avenue)

4. CALIFORNIA STARS (Mermaid Avenue)

5. CAN’T STAND IT (Summerteeth)

6. CANDYFLOSS (Summerteeth)

7. CHRIST FOR PRESIDENT (Mermaid Avenue)

8. ELT (Summerteeth)

9. FEED OF MAN (Mermaid Avenue)

10. HOODOO VOODOO (Mermaid Avenue)

13 Artists We'd Pay More Than $50 to See

Ulysses S. GrantIt pains us here at GLONO to see how rock and roll has become a product of the aristocracy. Skyrocketing tickets prices have driven most young people and low-wage earners right out of the market, leaving stadiums filled with the only people who can afford to pay hundreds of dollars for 90 minutes of fun. The result is more luxury boxes and Golden Circles populated by designer jean wearing sales reps and retirees with disposable income and a bad Just for Men habit.

So, many of us at HQ have a $50 rule. We’d love to tell you that it’s a protest of the above, but it’s also a product of simply not being able to justify the expense. There is an elite group of artists for whom we would break the $50 rule.
