Pinkerton Deluxe Reissue Details

Night Snow at Kambara

It’s been over a year since we first heard about Weezer‘s expanded Pinkerton reissue. Back then, we made a guess at the track list. Turns out we were pretty close, since the official track list has been announced with the release date of November 2.

We’re only getting one version of “You Gave Your Love to Me Softly,” and we’re not getting the radio remix of “Pink Triangle” or the Pixies cover, “Velouria.” Known Songs from the Black Hole songs “Blast Off!” and “Superfriend” are also left out, but there are a couple of songs we hadn’t heard of a year ago: “Getting Up And Leaving” and “Tragic Girl.”

Beatles Red and Blue Albums Remastered

The Beatles - 1962-1966 (Red) RemasteredThe Beatles - 1967-1970 (Blue) Remastered

For many music fans who were born after the Baby Boom, myself included, the introduction to the Beatles came through two double-album collections, The Beatles 1962-1966 and The Beatles 1967-1970, the Red and Blue albums. Containing a total of 54 selections approved by the former Beatles in 1973, these compilations dug deeper into the catalog than oldies radio or many of our parents ever acknowledged. I can remember taping the vinyl from the library and playing “I Am The Walrus” repeatedly. It felt like I was entering into a magic world, years before I would ingest any illicit substances. Down the rabbit hole, as it were, into the world of obsession and fandom.

I’m pretty sure that kids these days no longer consume music the same way I did, but hopefully curious kids wondering where to start with the Beatles will get ahold of these songs somehow, and dig in. EMI will reissue both collections on October 19, using the 2009 remasters. The liner notes have been expanded, but there won’t be any bonus tracks.

Bob Dylan Mono Box and Demos Due This Fall

Bob DylanAccording to information acquired by the Bob Dylan magazine, Isis, there are a couple of interesting Dylan projects coming up: a mono box set and a new volume of the Bootleg Series are coming this fall.

The mono box will be an eight-disc collection of his earliest albums (Bob Dylan, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, The Times They Are a-Changin’, Another Side of Bob Dylan, Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding) in their original monaural mixes which have never been released on CD.

Volume 9 of Dylan’s Bootleg Series will be a 47-song collection of his “Witmark Demos” and “Leeds Demos” that he recorded for his publisher between 1962 and 1964. Some of these were previously released on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3.

Complete Elvis Presley Masters Box Set

Complete Elvis Presley Masters

This is so hardcore. So remember earlier this year when we wrote about how they had gone back and worked on audiophile-quality remasters of all 711 of the master recordings Elvis Presley released in his lifetime, but the only place you could purchase them all together was via a corny collection from the Franklin Mint? Back then I whined, “it would be great if they could release a nice, chronologically sequenced box with good liner notes.” Well, my wish was somebody’s command because that’s exactly what they’re releasing: The Complete Elvis Presley Masters Collection Limited Edition.

The first run is limited to 1,000 copies and includes 30 discs (including all 711 master recordings plus 103 additional rare recordings — see complete tracklist below), a 240-page hardbound book, individually numbered display case, and an individually numbered certificate of authenticity. It ships on or before October 19, 2010. It costs $749 plus tax and $14.99 shipping. That’s steep, even for thirty CDs. But oh man, what a collection! Hopefully, a more reasonably priced second run will be released after the first run sells out…

Update: Some sharp-eyed fans on the Steve Hoffman forums have noticed that the collection is missing the song “Let’s Forget About the Stars,” recorded for the Charro soundtrack and issued on Let’s Be Friends in 1970. Oops!

Update #2: ElvisNews.com counters: Despite a typo on the official Sony Website and the Sony Press Release, we can now officially state that the 30 cd box set THE COMPLETE MASTERS is indeed… complete, including “Let’s Forget About The Stars” and “Big Boots”.

Apple Records Remasters (Badfinger, et al) Due October

Apple RecordsApple Records and EMI will be releasing remastered versions of key albums from the Apple Records catalog, including Badfinger, James Taylor, and Billy Preston.

“Each of the 15 albums in this bumper batch of Apple Records releases has been digitally remastered at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios in London by the same dedicated team of engineers behind The Beatles’ recent remastered catalogue releases of 2009.”

Wait, they’re passing over 1971’s The Radha Krsna Temple (SAPCOR 18)? That wouldn’t have happened if George was alive.

John Lennon Remasters Coming in October

John Lennon by Iain Macmillan

Eight of John Lennon‘s classic solo albums and other standout recordings have been digitally remastered from his original mixes for a global catalogue initiative commemorating the music legend’s 70th birthday, October 9, 2010. Plus, Double Fantasy will have a new “Stripped Down” remix in addition to the original mix. Plus, of course, a huge eleven-disc box set and couple of different greatest hits compilations.

No Two Virgins, Life with the Lions, or Wedding Album though. Because those albums are, you know, weird.

Charlie Watts on Exile Bonus Tracks

This is why Charlie Watts is the coolest Stone. When asked by Rolling Stone magazine what he thinks of the Exile reissue, the levelheaded drummer admitted, “My only criticism of the new ones is that the voice sounds like it was done yesterday.”

The article, “Making Exile,” in the latest issue of the magazine (not online) answers a few of our remaining questions about the ten previously unreleased bonus tracks: “Five of them had never been fitted out with vocals, or even lyrics, and Jagger set about finishing the job. […] Jagger brought Taylor into a London studio for a couple of hours last fall to put on ‘those Mick Taylor lead lines’.”

At least that’s what he’s saying this week. The story seems to change from interview to interview.

In other Exile news, there’s a fantastically sensationalistic article from the UK’s Daily Mail with all the gossip you could ever hope for: The most debauched album ever made: As a Stones classic is re-released, the truth about wife-swapping, all-out war between Mick and Keith and heroin on tap in an old Nazi HQ. Good times.

Update: Greg Kot talks to both Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Verdict: Keith “wasn’t heavily involved” in the bonus tracks, but Mick definitely was.

Ramones Rock ‘N’ Roll High School Reissued

Video: The Ramones – “Do You Wanna Dance?”

Looks like the gang at Shout Factory is releasing a new “Roger Corman’s Cult Classics” edition of the 1979 Ramones cinematic masterpiece, Rock ‘N’ Roll High School, on DVD and Blu-ray. If you haven’t seen it, you can only imagine how awesome it is. If you need a little help with your imagination, we’ve got another clip below…the scene wherein P. J. Soles sings the title track to her all-girl gym class. Aw yeah. Actually, for a Roger Corman production, it’s rather tame!
